Stronglifts 5x5 is a Starting Strength based program. There is an ebook. It inspired me to drop the dumbbells and move to compound barbell exercises.

The Bear is HIIT recommended by the author of Stronglifts.

I'm totally amateur, too, and I don't want to come across as riding Stronglifts' dick too hard, but that's half the point. I'm doing it with no history of weight training as a 33 yr old 130lb male. I haven't injured myself and I can see greater change in 8 weeks of this program than I did in a year of dumbbells.
It works. It is cost and time effective. It is fun.
