Staten Island

I'll be moving to Staten Island soon... Am I doomed to hanging out in guido-land? Another alternative is to make an hourly trip to the city... but that wouldn't always be practical.

my condolences.

I know, but unfortunately, I don't have any freaking choice due to the job... plus the price on the house was right.

Sorry to hear, brah.

I too am sorry to hear that. I grew up in SI, but went to HS off of the island. Now I live in Brooklyn.

If you have a car, trips into the nicer parts of Brooklyn and Manhattan can be very short.

If you have any specific questions you can feel free to ask me.

Has the traffic gotten any better now that construction on VZ is done? In '03-'05, I lived in Great Kills and worked in Ft Wadsworth and traffic on Hylan killed me. I ended up buying a place in New Dorp Beach this time.

Dude, you're buying a house there? I'm sorry for you, brah. I've no idea how much money they would have to pay me to get me to live/work on Staten Island, but I bet it's a lot.

I would recommend a daily, not hourly, trip.

Eh, Staten Island isn't horrible. You're buying a house, so I'm guessing you have a car. Traffic from SI to Brooklyn is bad during the rush, but if you come to town in the evening it won't be horrible. Not sure where on the island you'll be, but there's always a trip up to Jersey City or Hoboken. Still a bit stereotypically guido at times; just avoid it during St. Patrick's day.

Once you have a couple of childrens I'm sure you'll change your tune and Staten Island, New Jersey or Nassau County will all be under consideration.

Yeah, buying is cheaper than renting anything decent there.

Moving there because I don't have a choice... that's where work says I gotta go.

There is a boho bit by the ferry, I think. Vernon Reid of Living Color (the band) lives out there.

Snug Harbor is cool.

In '03-'05 I lived down in Great Kills, nice area but getting off the island was a bitch. I'm bit closer now... (for people familiar with SI - right south of the Miller Field). I know that at night traffic isn't horrible, but then going out to bars and such in the city would suck too if I have to drive. SI isn't exactly accessible by public transportation, especially at 3am.
