Whiskey Tasting Event Questions

Looking for a little adivce/feedback for a whiskey tasting event I am attending on 24 June. First off, what is the etiquette for the tasting itself? I've been to wine tastings before and done the whole sip-and-spit thing but I am not sure about whiskey. I'd hate to spit out a sip of good 20-year old single malt but I don't want to get hammered halfway through the evening.

My second question concerns clothing. It's an evening tasting on a yacht so I'm torn between a nice MTM suit (of which I have several - solids, stripes, navys, tans, charcoals, greys, etc) and one of my MTM navy blazers over a pair of tan gabardine trousers. My wife and I are going with another couple and all three are asking me for guidance on what to expect and what to wear since I am more in tune with this sort of thing. I am reluctant to admit I have no clue so I am seeking some input from people that know about these things.

As a side note: any other members here going to the Whiskey Cruise in DC on 24 June? If so I would love to meet up and say hi.

Versus drinking 25 tasting portions of good whisky and getting drunk and acting like an idiot? If the whisky is great, drink it. If it isn't, spit. Don't drink every portion, don't get drunk.

Tastings I've been to in the past usually have 5 or 6 whiskies on offer so you that you can drink without spitting.

Really? I've been to 3 whisky tastings and a couple of other non-whisky tastings. They've always had upwards of 10 or more.

I've got to get me some of that action! Would still try and drink them all though. Are they usually half-nips or full-nips?

They've been half pours, and at one tasting where there were 25, it wasn't even half pours.
However, I've been to a wine tasting before where you were encouraged to drink up, probably to loosen any inhibitions you might have against buying that $200 bottle.

Thanks for the feedback so far. The event I am attending is going to have over 150 offerings. Obviously I will not be attempting to sample them all. I'd be in a coma.

I may be going to a bourbon and bbq sampler extravaganza (20+ bourbons being sampled) this saturday. If I do go, I most certainly plan on getting drunk.
