None of our kids ha ever eaten off the "children's" menu. They don't eat that stuff at home, so they don't eat it out.

Only the 4 year old likes nori though.

I can proudly say I've never punished my kid by giving her some battered and fried garbage from a kids menu. I do understand that people do this, giving chicken fingers/mac and cheese/burgers/hotdogs shuts them up so the parents can eat in peace. Just over the weekend we ended up in a mediocre Japanese place because the kid was hankering for a tempura bento lunch while we were in a mall, and the kids menu items were spaghetti and burgers... in a Japanese restaurant??!!! wtf!!

my son pretty much does't eat school lunches - I am sure that the school lunch had nothing to do with his diet changing.

When I have children:

On Kunk's point - children will eat what i cook, they need to stop thinking they are so overpriviliged they can choose!

On Mauro's point - i would let them order an adult meal, as long as they ate it all, if they didn't eat most of it, the kids meal for them next time! Kids meals are crap, because they are cheap and what most kids want

I don't see any kids playing outside anymore, i'd be damned if my future kid spend his/her childhood infront of a tv or computer.

most probably- familiarity as most kids I know are averse to tasting what is new to them; and saltiness, as most kid menu items are packed with enough sodium to replenish a camel.

+1. One thing about living in a 3rd world country, my kid sees poverty and I have impressed upon her that while she might be nitpicking on how tough the meat is on her plate, some kids are sleeping hungry tonight.

My nephew did a similar change of heart when he turned 5. He used to eat literally anything (Indian, Mexican, Japanese, etc), but now he eats PB&J, mac n cheese, chicken strips, fries, and potato chips. Luckily he's active enough to burn it all off from BMX racing, but I think more social interaction at preschool/kindergarten could have some effect on it.
When there's a pack of kids yelling for chicken strips and fries, then wolfing it down and seeming to love it, the kids might be conforming to the group's opinion of fried crap.

What food isn't 'comfort food'? ...

Way to suck at life.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comfort_food#United_States

Favorite home-made comfort foods in the US include meatloaf, macaroni & cheese, mashed potatoes (or twice-baked potato), applesauce, fried chicken, chicken noodle soup, pizza, peanut butter, ice cream, and bacon, eggs, and hash browns for breakfast. Many creative mixes of foods have emerged, but probably would be too individualized to be considered authentically accepted comfort foods. Some also would consider potato chips as comfort food.

Even our favorite local Mexican restaurant has a separate kid's menu with a standard BURGER on it. What kid doesn't at least like tacos?
