Does this sound right? (body fat/weight)

Thread Starter
Joined a gym on Tuesday and went in for the fitness assessment yesterday (translation: let's try to sell you personal training!) - right now I'm at 242, 27% body fat according to one of those little machines they have. The last three months of living unhealthily have caught up to me.

I went in with a goal weight of 180 - if I hit that, I'm buying myself a Triumph Bonneville. But by their calculations, if I want to get to 13% body fat, my goal weight should be 210 (I'm 6-foot even FWIW) - gain seven pounds of muscle, lose 30 pounds of fat. And with their super-duper training, I could accomplish it in 12 months, easy...

That doesn't sound right to me - the goal weight still too high (it's not like I'm packed with muscle under the fat - I work in construction so I'm maybe average or a little above in what I can carry) and the time frame way too long. If I watch what I eat and exercise properly, 30 pounds should be accomplishable in 3 or 4 months, right?

30 lbs in 4 months is fast, but doable. 13% at 6" 210 would be pretty buff - if you do a lot of physical labor, then maybe a muscular 200 might be more realistic for you. ymmv though as it's your body. Good luck!

Now that's how to get motivated!

Good choice.

If your at 242lbs with 27% body fat and lose 30lbs of fat + gain 7 lbs of muscle then you would be at 219 lbs and a little over 16% bodyfat. This assumes that your fat measurement is right, which if its based off of bioelectrical impendance it probably isn't and that you don't lose any muscle mass while your losing fat. You can probably lose 30 lbs in four months with a fairly strict diet program, but keep in mind that you might not just lose fat, you may lose some muscle as well. I'd suggest deiting and working to some goal and then re-evaluate when you get there.

For the record I'm 6'1" 190 and in decent shape, I'd guess my bf% right now is 10-12%, here's a pic of me in that range: *Click at own risk* http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/4...03952origj.jpg Sorry was just trying to give OP an idea of how huge he'd be if he was 210 and 13% bf. So if you were 6' 210 with 13% bf you'd be pretty buff. At 242, I think your goal weight of 180 lbs should be your first target, and not worry about bf% or muscle mass. You'll obviously gain some muscle and strength as you slim down, and once you hit 180 you can start a clean bulk towards more muscle if that's what you want. Oh and I think 12 months of training is plausible to get that, but that's still more then 1 lb per week, and it can be tough to maintain that loss rate over such a long period, so don't get discouraged if that last 15-20 lbs is pretty stubborn. In any case good on you for getting your butt in gear and best of luck man.

Can there be a moratorium on shirtless bathroom pictures? It's creepy as fuck. It's even worse when people have gym rat bodies.

I'm 6 feet and 195 right now, and my current bf is 13-14%. I am aiming to get down to 185 myself by labor day.

I recommend you get dunked to get an accurate assessment of where you are right now. http://www.getdunked.com is a local place for me. The tools they use at gyms and most doctors offices are not at all accurate and it's good to know exactly where you're starting from.

Losing 30 pounds in 3-4 months is very possible and easy if you entirely commit. If you want to see real results I'd recommend seeing some kind of nutritionist, working with a trainer and drinking TONS of water; when I lost a bunch of weight (3 years ago) I drank 3 liters of water a day. FWIW, I went from 22% to 14% in 5 months - I'm now at 10.5%. I'm 5'7 160lb.

Good luck.
