How can I wear a suit and NOT look like a banker?

I don't want to dress like a banker when wearing a suit to a wedding, funeral, party, night-on-the-town, date or nice dinner. How can I acheive the best look?

Thanks!

Solid flannel. Bankers don't normally wear that any more.

Don't wear a tie. Seriously, who f**king needs 'em. Wear a great suit with a nice high open collar.

(This doesn't apply to funerals. When you go to a funeral, it's OK to dress like somebody died.)

Is that rhyming slang?

Anyway, I would have thought patterns and brigher colours were key (of course, in moderation and with a sense of style). Bankers don't wear hacking jackets, boldly patterned shirts, pocket squares, dotted knit ties etc.

how about wearing your suit and doing a night shift at McDonald's? Nobody will mistake you for a banker then..

If you currently have a job most people won't mistake you for a banker...

OK, serious reply.

1) do not wear a Ferragamo or Hermes whimsical print tie

2) do not wear Gucci or Ferragamo bit loafers

3) do not wear a massive, oversized watch

4) avoid pinstripe/chalkstripe

5) do not wear a french cuff shirt

I would recommend not looking like a goddamn banker.

The sad thing is you can get brilliantly cut suits, sometimes handmade, OTR in boutiques for a fraction of the price of all those ill-fitting high-gorge businessman suits.
