The Illusionist

I just watched this again for the first time since I saw it in theaters. What a great movie. Sure it's not groundbreaking or avant-garde but it's darkly romantic and beautifully shot. Paul Giamatti steals every scene he's in and Ed Norton's grim goateed visage has just the tiniest hint of camp and is a joy to watch.

I just want to wear Ann Demeulemeester exclusively and move to Prague now.

I liked it too, but since they came out at pretty much the same time, I just can't help comparing it to The Prestige, which I think is superior in every respect.

Yep, Biel is good but Johansson is just better.

I actually much preferred Illusionist to Prestige. Both were entertaining. Just thought Illusionist had better storytelling and solid performances from everyone. Giamatti, Sewell, Norton, all very good.

Good flick, but it was kinda a "Show up at the party wearing the same thing" deal with the Prestige out around the same time.

I enjoyed both The Illusionist and The Prestige.

I saw The Illusionist a while ago and enjoyed it, but I've never seen The Prestige. I'm going to have to add it to my Netflix queue.

How similar are they? Are we talking Deep Impact/Armageddon similar, or are they just both period flicks with plots that happen to revolve around magic?

the latter. the prestige is a more sophisticated, mature film IMO

Illusionist was set in Vienna, but filmed in Prague. They didn't bother to avoid showing famous landmarks - like the national castle - throughout the film.

Both movies were passable, but the Illusionist was less ambitious which might have been a good idea considering what the Prestige ended up being...

The Prestige has Bowie as Nicola Tesla which is perhaps the most inspired bit of casting in recent years. I couldn't stop laughing in those scenes.

Bowie was perfect.

A Tesla biopic starring Bowie would be amazing.
