Need book(s) recommendation - non fiction

I picked up Confessions of an EHM the other day and am nearly through it. While the subject matter is definitely very interesting, I'm finding the author's narrative voice incredibly dislikable, self-aggrandizing, and annoyingly and insincerely apologetic for his actions. Anyway, I'll finish it, but now I want more books in a similar vein perhaps with more emphasis on history and facts as opposed to poorly written narrative. Well, actually, I do enjoy narrative but this guy just sounds like a douche.

Any suggestions?

sorry, i was asking specifically about books covering the same sort of subject matter as Confessions of an Economic Hit Man... soooo post WWII history on the rise of the World Bank, IMF, globalization, and the such. also even more specifically, i'd love some books on both sides of the political spectrum on south american economic/political history since wwii and the chicago economists' impacts.

Mate, I've just started reading Confessions myself. I'm only three chapters in but I've heard similar comments to yours.

You may want to check out 'The World is Flat' by Thomas L. Friedman. He's a Pulitzer winning journo. It's about how the internet has changed the barriers to entry for most industries and how emerging economies are now able to compete against first world economies. It's an interesting read. If you like it Friedman also wrote another good book called 'The Lexus and the Olive Tree'.

The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York by Robert A. Caro

I'm about 3/4 of the way through the 1200 pages and I'm absolutely devouring it. I'm sure a lot of the older generation here have read it but I feel robbed that living in NY I haven't read this until now. The only reason I looked into it was because I saw Caro on Charlie Rose.

i suggest latin american economic history from a bean's perspective: the coffee book.

this book beautifully explains how the coffee industry works, and all the historical and political baggage that comes with it. coffee goes through many steps before reaching your cup: from growers, to pulpers, to shippers, to roasters, to starbucks and supermarkets. this supply chain pressures growers to sell for the cheapest price possible - in effect screwing the poor countries. thus coffee is the perfect symbol of globalisation - of third world countries supplying the raw materials that feed america's crazy appetite for consumption. fucking fascinating read.

The Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent (the book Chavez gave to Obama)

Experiments in Government and the Essentials of the Constitution - Elihu Root
At your own risk: The creature from Jekyll Island.

Confessions manages to turn an act of attrition into a pat on the back.

Be warned, youre heading into crackpot territory.
