Personal cards

I had a question on style rather than clothing, but here goes -

Do you think a personal card (vs a business card) is a little conceited looking, or a good practical thing?

I ask as I was out and about last night in a nice bar, and sometimes I dont carry my mobile to keep my pockets free, and a nice young lady gave me her facebook and email address.

Would a personal card with my personal mobile, email and facebook address on, be a little conceited (and worse look like I'm a player) for socialising? Obviously in some circumstances I dont want to give a business card.

Its a calling card my man...may come across as over the top if you only use it, and design it, for socializing...just try and make it more "business".

You could also do a search over at AAAC and they have lots of talk about it.

i think its a totally fine, practical thing to do. the design of the card need some exploration, though im sure someone will chime in

Yes I did think perhaps OTT,

That said my job is Business development as well as Financial adviser, so I do alot of socialising.

What's AAAC please mate?

My business cards don't have any details on them apart from my name, so I can scribble whatever specific contact details I want on the reverse.

I think this is just the way of the modern world - multiple social/professional circles that you don't necessarily want the OTHER circles to be aware of. Simple business cards with just my name on them allow me to customise what details I give to different people, while still looking professional.

Plus it looks kind of cool to write the details on the back with a nice pen (yeah, I'm shallow).

A friend of mine took this idea to the next level by getting proper full-size calling cards made rather the business cards I use.

^^^ A few years ago I had a "batphone". I carried a blackberry during the day and then if I went out at night I would switch to a razr. Now I just carry a blackberry full time. Didn't make much sense to have 2 phones/phone numbers. It wasn't like I was married or anything. Just used the second phone more like a voice mail. Now that I look back at it, it worked pretty well. I had a second line added to my account for $10 a month, and just kept it turned off voice mail purposes. If my social life ever picks up again I may need to open a second account again...Hmmm

As far as calling cards go, I tried that too. I felt a little too much like a tool using them. I love the concept but just felt wierd considering now a girl can just put your number in her cell phone

IF you use it strictly for socializing thats ridiculous. If its for business but you occasionally give it out in social situations thats fine.

I think personal cards scream desperation. This is an opinion formulated from responses a friend of mine had printing a set for himself. Women, even those who were interested in him, thought that man who went to these extreme lengths for "social marketing" seemed desperate and were eventually turned off. If you have her name....I am sure you can find her or a person that knows her. If you have to spring something, even a business card works better IMHO, but even this may be too much. Take this for what you will, I have been out of the game for about 8 years now so things may have changed.

^I have to admit, I have a negative perception of them as well, perhaps less because of the cards than some of the people prone to handing them out.

I also wonder whether a card wouldn't be much more likely to be lost or tossed than a number saved into a phone.

They are memorable, yes, but I'm not sure I want to be remembered as the guy with the personalized calling cards.

ok, refrain my answer again, if you're using this for picking up chick only, my answer would be NO, DON'T EVER GET THAT.

Carry another phone, or get a slimmer blackberry would be the answer. Personally I always ask girl to type her own number and name on my phone, then I will call/text her on the spot, so she gets my number (or if no reception, I will type it for her). Doing this way save me the embarassment of not really remember what the hell her name is after about 10 shots...

I like this advice.

A personal card is a bit too much, unless you are a player and the girl knows it.

+1. I think Holdfast had the right idea of having a simple business card with room to add details by hand.

For networking ,they're very useful ,even I don't recall keeping business cards for very long ...
I tend to take someone's e-mail address or phone number if I'm really interested in contacting them again..
For social settings, i do find them outdated and a bit pompous...Very 80's and Patrick Bateman..
