How Important is Clothing Quality to One's Career? - Page 3

I must say, as a young man in the Law, dressing well has done wonders for me. For a start, I think it makes me look older, and more successful than I am. It gives me (along with my distinctive hairstyle and, perhaps, sense of humour) a lot of "brand recognition" - people remember me even at six or twelve month intervals.

There is a real division, I find, between the Barristers on the one hand, who tend to dress in a fairly classic fashion (whatever their age), and the Solicitors who tend to be quite trendy. I suppose, square-toes KCs would look stupid with the fancy dress?

Everyone appreciated a well dressed, well groomed person, at any age of either observer or subject. However, overdoing it can run you into trouble if youre young or ridicule if youre older. That is wear the terms "classic" and "traditional" start coming into play. You can "go to town" at Paul Stuart and everyone will think youre a smart young lad, but, unless youre in a very fashion forward industry, wearing versace suits to the office isn't going to endear you.

Here is something that may be of interest. I was going to make it a lot more detailed initially, but probably I'll have several installments if people like the direction it is going in.

The more "classic" the look, the "bolder" you can get, the more "garmento" or designer, the more you need to be careful within the standard mainstream industries.
