this kfc commercial seemingly depicts people from different cultures debating grilled vs. fried kfc. for no reason i can see -- the asian americans in this ad are portrayed as japanese chefs with heavy accents. uh... wtf?

this is also the first kfc ad to feature asians.

see AZN commentary here: http://www.8asians.com/2009/06/01/kfc-vs-kgc-wtf/

you can't make everyone happy. As a retailer I know this.
I think they were suppose to be sushi chefs. I dunno. I am stumped.

see, that would make sense if everyone else was a chef. but that isn't the case.

people like you result in the pussification of america. Its an ad, lighten up. You really Col. Sanders set out to make Asians the butt of a joke? Get a grip.

This is new! Normally KFC just stereotypes black people.

Yeah, and look how well it worked in bringing them to their restaurants. Maybe now they're working the Asian market???

umm.... this was an ad too.

as was this:

advertising =/= "this is socially acceptable"

as a gookinese-american, i dont think it's a big deal, and find it humorous. If i was black, I'd be pissed that I wasnt portrayed with a big watermelon in the other hand

Don't be an Uncle Tong! This is something worth getting mildly irritated about.

the ad would also be different if that were the case, where everyone was made fun of equally. like south park.

the thing is, most asian-americans won't give a rat's ass, and those are the ones that are pretty assimilated into american culture as it is, and most of those that fall into that social stratification do so with a modicum of self-deprecation -- having already grown up subjected to those stereotypes and know they don't apply to you, and thus are less likely to care about them and are more wont to make jokes poking fun at their own culture.

yet, these stereotypes are negatively portraying the OTHER end of the asian-american experience, many first-generationers who are still struggling to adapt into american society -- often the subject of ridicule from outsiders AND people of their own kind. reinforcing this sort of stereotype in the mainstream media -- especially in an arbitary context like the commercial in question, is pretty uncalled for. these kinds of images and portrayals of asians are the kinds of shit that leads to shootings in binghamton.

In continuity with their other adds, they have shown commercials with white/black chefs as well. Its being taken out of context if not included in the totality of the add campaign.

As to the pics above, youre are clearly trying to sensationalize the issue with non sequitor racial/ child pr0n strawmen.

i was trying to point out that "it's just an ad" is a poor reason to disregard it. "not giving a shit" is more acceptable.

I recently went to KFC to get myself a big bucket of fat and there was an ad there with all white children with some asians peppered in. Only one possibly black kid (undetermined, he was hella pale) and he was hiding his face with his hands. I jokes about it with the gook that was with me.

Contextually speaking it is "just an add" since they have included other chefs elsewhere. That you dont like the way Japanese sushi chefs are being portrayed due to ethnic stigmas is one thing but to compare it to some add for ice cream which was probably made before it could be taken into account how the internet would affect the awareness to and proliferation of child sex is totally off base.
