Tipping Etiquette

What's protocol for car services when it's been arranged by someone else?

Today, car service is already arranged for me from LGA to the city. In the past, I tipped car services like 10%, but recently in Phoenix on a $35 ride, an associate only had $40 cash and murmured to me, "Ah, shitty tip for him but he'll live." I thought $5 was totally legit???

Anyway, so on this pre-arranged ride, am I still supposed to tip? Will I sign something on the payer's behalf? How much to tip? etc.

I'd say $5 was fine.

My friend is a limo driver. He says 12% is a good tip. So for a night out in the limo he'll charge the client $500 and usually get a $60 tip.

It needs to be said.

Tipping is for small timers. They're lucky they get to do business with you.

Boston Coach doesn't allow tips. Try them next time.

Unless he managed to outrun the police that were chasing you, a $5 tip is enough.

I was recently on a week long stay in Boston, with a limo serviced paid for by the good people of New Brunswick (Provincial thing....) They asked me not to tip the drivers, as a built in gratuity is generally pre-paid, or negotiated in the contract. Not always, but something to think about!
