I'm not sure how true this is, but I recall once reading somewhere that the suit was actually made of a mix of blue and green fibers, which gave it sort of a blue-ish gray appearance on film. That's why the color seems to vary from shot to shot. Again, I'm not sure if that's true or not, but it seems plausible.

I feel my avatar should make an appearance in this thread.

Also, here's a fun thing to look for in the Mt. Rushmore shooting scene:

Notice how the kid to Eve's right already has his fingers in his ears in anticipation of the shot

Good to know that I'm not colour blind.

How can anyone get sick of talking about that suit? And of Cary Grant?

I have seen tons of times the movie And he uses two different suits and ties.

One is slimmer that the ther one. I guess the best was taylores by Quintino from Beverly Hills. That was told in SF..

By the way the pants were huge.. but in all th 50´s movies were same way..

Maybe I'm just being grouchy or ignorant, but I'm not all that impressed.

Roger Thornhill, though, is very UHB. You should study him. For example:

Roger Thornhill: Now you listen to me, I'm an advertising man, not a red herring. I've got a job, a secretary, a mother, two ex-wives and several bartenders that depend upon me, and I don't intend to disappoint them all by getting myself "slightly" killed.

This is a handsome, famous suit, and an oft-discussed one. The lines are very clean, and it certainly isn't a sack suit: the coat is darted, and the shoulders are not really natural. I would say that the overall effect is due more to cut and fit than to design. At any rate, the most remarkable thing for me remains the colour (as I remember it from the film, i.e. like in the still of the shooting above). I've never seen anything like it in any of the usual books, or indeed anywhere else. What do you reckon the material is? A sharkskin of sorts?

The sleeves on several of the versions of it are not great, and sometimes I see funky things in shoulder in some of the scenes. As M. noted, there appears to have been multiple versions of it produced since it was costume and used in many action scenes.

But: it makes him look remarkable among the other characters, and is certainly iconic.

Torregrossa's book has as it a 14oz...it doesn't look like a sharkskin to me.

I think the break in CG's pants in the photo with Hitchcock is perfect. Unfortunately, it's perfect because he has his hands in his pockets. If his hands were out of his pockets, they'd be way too long.

Yes, iconic is the key. Neither Grant nor that suit are sufficient for icon status in NBNW, but their conjunction somehow becomes necessary and sufficient.

And it was certainly made in many non-identical copies by Quintino and/or his Demiurgus. One of them may be the archetype, or perhaps the archetype is in our minds. That's more likely, as I can't picture this Quintino fellow as more than a Demiurgus.

As for the cloth, 14 oz seems plausible. But what weave/finish could it be? It doesn't look like a plain worsted to me. Maybe a nailhead? I really don't know.
