thrifting in los angeles? - Page 2

I have very little interest in the Aardvarks type places. Rarely anything worth buying there, unless you're looking for 70s picture shirts or something similarly ironic. I'd rather sift at Goodwill.

That said, anyone have any suggestions for higher-end thrifts? I did a lot of shopping in SF at the Symphony thrift store, the private elementary school thrift stores, etc, which tended to carry a lot of used high-end old man clothes at prices above Goodwill but well below consignment stores.

And while we're at it, consignment stores?

I've had a lot of good luck on the west side, and at the NCJW thrifts (as well as various smaller thrifts). I've found almost nothing at any Out of the Closet, though some are less awful than others. Generally it's the usual pattern: follow the affluence, go regularly.

O/T - I liked your videos. Much more informative and entertaining than anything I've seen on the telly. The shoe tying trick created a paradigm shift in my brain. Paul Feig rules!

Thank you! Eventually we're going to do one about thrifting.

I'm looking forward to this.

Also, do you define 'thrifting' as thrift stores only, or do resale/consignment shops fall under your umbrella of thrifting also?

there used to be a men's consignment shop somewhere in the south bay ... manhattan beach/torrance/redondo beach area. wasn't into clothes to much then, but it seemed pricey. for me, it's just a weird hobby and i usually hit just the neighborhood GW, Cancer Society, etc. i live in long beach, so it's VERY spotty. lots of st. john's bay and nordstrom's.

I'm definitely interested in hearing about any men's consignment. I went to Armani Wells, which is in Studio City, and I really didn't think much of the selection. Very, uhm... True Religion-y?

Try Crossroads and Wasteland in Santa Monica. Sometimes you can find decent stuff.

Rags to Riches in Newport Beach...did anyone use to go here? It was GREAT way back when...for the member who mentioned follow the affluence, it doesn't get much more affluent than Newport Beach! I used to pick up so many great items there...but last time I went, they completely toned down the clothing section. It is balls now.

There is a Goodwill and Salvation Army within a couple miles, and while not nearly as good as Rags to Riches was, you can sometimes find some gems (as with many thrift stores).

I don't know how comprehensive it is, but this site lists thrift/consignment stores for every area:
