After you've been buying high quality stuff for a few years, there isn't much more to get
True, but it's unlikely I'll be buying more than maybe 1 or 2 items per season after F/W09. A man does not need so many bedford jackets (I already have 5!) and the only real core pieces I'm missing are some fishing vests and hoodies.
I think for the average guy who does not have to dress up everyday, that a couple of suits in navy and charcoal are all that you really ever need.
After less than a year of buying, I think I'm at the point where I might buy one or two shirts this FW and then I'm done. I really don't need anything more in my closet. It's not that I have a ton of clothes, but enough, and they're pretty much all nice pieces, IMO (EG, MFSC, KMW, NdG, etc). You're right about suits, robin. I have one 'nice' charcoal suit (BR Monogram) that I'm lucky if I wear more than once each year. It's plenty.
