Bah, I say to all of you doubters. I have a plaid hacking jacket in various shades of earthtone that works well with a white silk square. I like to pair the jacket with two other patterns, and sometimes the plain white silk can be a nice break from all the activity. The jacket itself is very busy and the fabric very coarse, so the white silk can make for a surprisingly interesting contrast, especially when white is a secondary color in, say, my tie.
I don't wear a white silk square often, and I agree that tipped edges usually look better, but I like to keep one.
