Lutefisk: I know icelanders who won't touch the crap.

Really? I like sushi with wasabi. Is adding wasabi not traditional? Never been to Japan or had really traditional sushi.

Oh no no no, I enjoy pickled herring. Surströmming isn't the same thing. They're fish that are fermented in summer sunlight without any preservation at all. To give you an idea of how foul the stuff is, most "ripe" cans of the stuff wil resemble balls because they'll be turgid from the gasses that the fish emit. Several airlines (Air France, Brit Airways off the top of my head) have banned it because the cans are potentially explosive. Given that you have to close your nose off to eat durian (I cheat and buy durian ice cream), I tried to do the same with surströmming. But it has a disgustingly sharp sourness to it. I couldn't like it at all, and I found out later that some scandinavians actually rinse the stuff in soda water to make it more palatable.

Why so many for the Natto? Its not that bad. I think it tastes a bit like rum and the texture doesnt bug me. Similar texture to okra. Reminds me of a Tamale (but those are better):

I was going to say uni like many have before. I did, however, have occasion to watch some of my buddies eat gefilte when we were pledges (this was years ago but, interestingly, my fraternity was indeed kicked-off campus for abusive hazing ) and I have often thought that that might be even worse.

I am not sure if it is traditional. We had japanese speaking and writing class back in college and we had to prepare japanese food. Not a huge fan of their raw food to be honest. Just remembering the taste of wasabi is like...

Do you like horseradish? Pretty much most wasabi you find in North America is made with Horseradish and/or mustard with green dye. I love it when you eat wasabi and exhale at the same time, the fumes from the wasabi fills the sinuses and it just hits you like a punch in the nose.

I am not sure if the wasabi that was brought by our sensei (that's what we need to call her) was made from horseradish. My guess is either her Japanese husband imported it from Japan or they just bought it from some Japanese stores.

I had natto, and while its not something I want to eat that often it wasn't terrible. I had this "death" box on the train from Tokyo to Kyoto and was sick and didn't eat anything for a day after it... It must have been a combination of jetlag, and the food, but it was an awful experience.
