I am up in Hanoi at the moment on client duty, so had dinner with the head of public affairs from Vietnam Airlines last night.

Fabulous restaurant called Wild Lotus - anyone passing through Hanoi should check it out.

The VNA guy is notoriously hospitable (sometimes I really like VNese people) so he took me and one of my staff and my client and his wife back to his house and opened a bottle of Johnny Walker Gold Label and lined up the shots.

Shot them like a trad pistol.

Karaoke with his family ensued (in their karaoke room no less).

Taxi. Bed. Mild hangover.

Quite simply put, our relationship does not really have a future. We get along well but are mismatched as a couple in many ways. In forum lingo, you would say I'm not well-accessorized. Now I'm ready to move on.

Saturday night went to dinner with friends at one of my favorite restaurants, place called Nong (which is VNese for delicious). They have great Bun Cha there, which are little pork balls that you drown in fish sauce and then wrap in lettuce and eat with very fine noodles and some other vegetables.

Went to a bar called Underground after that. I nursed a Heineken most of the night since Ive been drinking too much lately.

From there we went to a club called Yang. Yang is one of those places that is either really good or really empty - this week it was really good. I left at about 12, but from what I am told, my friends went on a lot later and are still suffering for it.

Sunday - I go trail running out in the jungle every Sunday, on the way to meet the group I ran into a person who I used to know back in my hometown of Adelaide.

Hadnt seen her in probably 10 years, was on a tour here. Organised to meet her and her husband for drinks after the run.

Good run, tough. About 12km.

Back to city, called woman-and-husband and had a very pleasant evening catching up on the rumor mill from the old-town.

so Nantucket now that we are discussing ur username in three different threads, how did your newly-single-self roll this weekend?

And as for being single, that only goes for the six days a week I'm not with P*ssycat. She came over early Sunday morning and slept all day (she works nights). This is a great activity if you enjoy spending all of a sunny and relatively warm day in bed doing nothing. Considering how I feel, that probably wasn't a bad way to spend the day.

Worked out like a crazy man on Saturday (8 K rowing in 2000 splits, then 800 m in 200 m splits, then sprinting (400 m x 5 in 60 secs splits), then lifting and calesthenics (am working my way up to the vaunted one arm "Rambo" pullup,) so was super tired and rolled on the couch watching the Olympics and eating take out Chinese.

Tiredness extended to Sunday, when we had a snowstorm. Went to China Pearl for Dimsum anyway because we'd already made plans, and one of the guys was really jonesing for it. Rolled to Filene's Basement for no reaason except that it was on the way home (I have no money left for clothes anyway.) Worked out in my makeshift homegym in the basement despite tiredness to not get off schedule, and watched more Olympics and did the laundry. Wished I were in Torino and was a world class snowboarder. Went to bed.

Yes, I rolled hard.

Memorable quote: "Please remember that if you are touching both trains at once you may receive an electric shock". Endured the hateful glares of the people on the Rescue Train, who were apparently upset that they had to wait ten minutes for all of us to transfer and get situated, though we'd been waiting for almost an hour just for them to arrive. Glared back, except at that one guy who had a tattoo on his neck. Personal rule of mine never to mess with anyone who has a tattooed neck. Had great Chinese food somewhere in the Village. Then went to see Manderlay at the IFC with one of the NYC friends. Both of us were slightly surprised to have loved it. Trekked all the way back uptown to 157th, where NYC friends live. Drinking and conversation until the early AM hours. Crashed. Woke up, got lunch, went with another NYC friend to do some shooting for a small film he's working on. Just needed some exterior shots, so we went to Prospect Park, in order to meet up with a friend who lives in Park Slope afterwards. It takes a long, long time to get to Brooklyn from Washington Heights.

Watched people in the park, wishing that I had a sled or a dog, or possibly a sled dog. Met with friends, went to some tea bar with these really annoying barristas who literally stole a seat out from under me to prop open a door directly behind me to let in "a little air". Which was literally freezing. So I stole back the chair and closed the door. And then they did it again. Rather than start something, we all left, and then I had to get back to Philly. Took a minor eternity to make my way back; everything was moving slowly with the storm. Watched the olympics, and like LA Guy, wished that I was in Turin and was a world-class snowboarder. Slept. Awoke, checked Superfuture from work, and saw LA Guy directing us all to AAAC. Rejoiced. Posted here.

She said she wanted to go out again, I smiled and agreed right away. That night filmed a skit as Donald Trump for my Negotiations class presentation. Dressed up in a fleece bathrobe, Jantzen suit shirt, Duchamp scarf tied as ascot and a pound of gel in my hair. Pretended to be Trump before he goes to work. Saturday Sore from climbing, finished Herman Hesse's "Siddhartha" for class. Worked on an essay, laundry, the like. That night went to see "Trishtam & Shandy: A Cock & Bull Story" with beautiful, but unfortunately attached, friend. Fantastic movie, very British, very good. Had dinner with her after, she lamented about her failing relationship. Ended up at a birthday party of her friend. Met some great people, including a girl named Kitty. I'm really hoping that is short for something. She's a foodie and so we agreed to check out a new restuarant in Kensington Market together. Got home at 3, ate and fell asleep. That was about it for going out... A. Edit - Watched 4 or 5 episodes of 1st season of Lost throughout the weekend. Best. TV. Show. Ever. (besides Arrested Development)

Originally posted by m@t [br]a weekend of heavy rolling.... Friday night had a friend's housewarming party. Really good night, he had one of the best Indian places in town cater it, mountains of really good food, plenty to drink and a good crowd there. Small place - maybe 900 or 1000 square feet - and he had probably 40-of-our-closest there, so it made for a great atmosphere. From there went to Q Bar (same place I took Andy). Was plenty drunk-enough by that time, and so headed home at about 1. Saturday was Australia Day. Technically speaking Australia Day is Jan 26, but that fell during the Lunar New Year period when no one was here, so they postponed the annual party by a month. Best day of the year once again. July the 4th gets the Americans out. Bastille Day gets the French out. Every day gets the Brits out. Australia Day is the only one that gets EVERYONE out. Maybe 2000 people - pretty much the entire Western-expat community of the city - at a $30 all-you-can-eat and all-you-can-drink 12 hour party in a waterslide park. Sadly this will be last one there (its my third time) because they are bulldozing Saigon Waterpark to put in more luxury apartments. [V] Anyhow, that is how I rolled.

We decided to make our way to a quaint dim sum wine bar. I shared pork/potato and shrimp dumplings with a friend while knocking a couple more beers back. The music was horrendous though, and being with a friend who is a music teacher just made it even more obvious for us amateurs.

We then proceeded to hit a bar/dance club at around 9:30pm when we where finished eating. The place was dead as usual until around 11:30. We were up stairs chilling, switching now to hard alcohol instead of beer. One friend nearly passed out (he drank a LOT before even leaving) but he caught his second wind around 11:00. We found a few more friends there and some nice girls and proceeded to hit the basement which is where the dance floor is. We were standing at the bar drinking more when 3 cute cubanas took my arm and we danced the rest of the night away. My friends where out there as well and it was a good time, they played too much hip hop but some good latin beats where thrown in the mix. At the end of the night we went to a pizza restaurant quickly and then went back to his condo where I proceeded to pass out rather quickly.

Thus ends another pretty good weekend. Hopefully next weekend possibly New York. Ferry Corsten is coming but not sure if we will be attending.

Bought some thermals and a warm coat at Patagonia. After browsing for a while, we took a break at the L'occitane cafe in Soho. After some more window shopping, we met a friend down in Chinatown at Peking Duck House. Predictably, we had Peking duck. I also had a couple of beers. We then took a cab down to Greenwich Village to a nice little cafe where we chatted and drank coffee beverages. Can't remember the name of the cafe, it was chosen at random.

Right now my wife is at work, and I'm procrastinating. I should be doing some homework.

Was supposed to go to the bars, but ended up going to a friends instead. Her BF came over drunk and was starting stuff with everyone. Ended up hitting her, and then picked her up and tossed her onto a table that was covered in glasses and bottles. We kick him out and lock the door. 5 mins later he kicks the door in, and then he starts stuff with me, pushing me and just generally talking me down. He was getting more violent and started breaking random stuff in the house, and throwing objects at her. Then he starts pushing me and tries to kick me out of a house that doesnt belong to him. I grab his arm and throw him onto the ground, get on top, grab a knife from the table that was used for cutting limes (Corona night), and hold it to him, tell him he needs to leave now. I don't hurt him, but I make sure to draw some blood from his throat so he knows I'm not kiddign around. Normally I am not one to get into fights, but he was waaayy out of line and she was crying and really freaking out. She is calling the cops next time he comes over.

Now, back home, about to go to bed and sleep it off...

She's going to call the cops the NEXT time he comes over? Are you s**ttin' me? You have no idea what sort of mess you are in here. What was the reason for not calling the cops during his rampage? If she is putting up with his s**t, and not calling the cops, she is crazy. Being a knight in shining armor for a crazy chick can only lead to bad things. This sort of thing only leads to emergency room visits, lawyer bills, or having to buy a nice funeral suit....hopefully not your own.

He had managed to drunk-drive all the way up to his home but we had one of his friend to go and tell him no to do that ever again. Hell, I don't know him but if he needed money I would have lended some help paying that taxi bill or got one of my friend to drive him home. (would have done it myself if I had a car and wouldn't have, myself, have qualified for drunk driving...).

There's another party tonight and it has potential to get wild. Should be fun!

[br]Crazy crazy night...

Jay,

Yeah, was not in the best frame of mind last night, and acted kind of stupid. Anyway, cops were not called because there were drugs and alcohol in the house and she is under 21, and was very intoxicated. She is actually a very stable person but is just way too nice and tries to see good in everyone, even from this POS. She cannot shake him off, because every time they break up, he'll do something like kick in the back door or break in a window in the middle of the night to talk. They had broken up for 2 weeks one time, and she had started seeing another guy. The new guy woke up in the middle of the night one time with her ex-bf standing over him, knife to his throat. We have no idea how he got into his house, but he did. This is the kind of situation it is.

Isn't this "restraining order" time?

Has your friend talked with anyone about, if nothing else, possible steps she can take to protect herself? Change the locks, secure the windows, etc. The alcohol and drugs being part of the mix may cause hesitancy to file a report, but I have to believe a history of breaking and entering, physical abuse, and a knife at another's throat trumps the pause. What more is needed?

It's a stupid situation in which no one should be involved. If "next time he comes over" means a line has finally been drawn, then, great, best of luck, hope it doesn't come to that and everyone moves on. But if it means doing nothing and hoping, that's almost asking for trouble.

[br]Yeah, it really is a shame because she is a very sweet and smart girl, but got herself involved in something she doesn't know how to get out of. I think she always takes him back because of what he might do if she broke up with him.

I am going to talk to her today. I knew the relationship wasn't great, and thought some of it might have been exaggerated, but was shocked to see what it was like.

today went out to Saigon Country Club...played some social softball, sat by the pool, saw my friends gf with another guy, called my friend, watched Brokeback Mountain on pirate DVD, contemplated career switch to gay-cowboy.

last night - Australian Chamber of Commerce event.

Was ok, I guess, but they had this weird set up where had to buy drink coupons from one end of the room, then walk all the way to the bar at the other end.

Was very annoying, especially since it was a short event (only a couple of hours) so didnt want to buy a bunch of coupons to save walking back and forth, knowing that they will be shutting the bar really soon, and you would just be stuck with a pocket full of coupons (or a table full of gettng-warm beer).

In the end, I guess it just cost them revenue cos everyone just drank less...something I never thought I would see at an Australian night.

reopening of a bar/restaurant called la Casa Latina - I liked it better before the renovation personally.

served precious little food, so the entire population of the opening surfaced at the kebab shop next door, went out to play pool after that.

won about $7 playing pool, felt like Paul Newman

went home, witnessed three accidents on the way - so many crazy drivers out.

Nothing tonight. But last Saturday:

Was out for a nice walk on Newbury Street with my wife. Got some snide comments from three teenagers in front of me. Walked up really quickly behind them and asked them if they had a problem. Evidently, there were no problems. I made them go into Newbury Comics (a record store). One of them made a hand gesture. I told him that humiliation was better than the alternatives and waved them into the store. The smartest of the bunch helped them in.

I went shopping, of course! I spent several hours matching pant fabrics to my new borrelli jackets. I ended up picking 5. A navy silk, charcoal 120s twill, 120s med grey, 120s mocha twill, and a 120s beige. Now I just have to wait 6 weeks =/

They're all going to be flat fronts with a medium rise and a tapered leg to show of the EGs when I get them!

Tonight:I'm still at the office as i write this.

Sat outside my hooch and smoked a novelty cigar, didn't even have a near beer to go with it. Anyway, it was a Makers Mark flavored cigar. Overall a bit light for my tastes, but had a nifty sweet bite at the beginning of the pull. If anyone has a spare case of Cohibas they're looking to get rid of, I'll send you my address
