Did you have business there or did you just decide to pick up and go?

i had a shit ton of miles expiring shortly, had to burn them on somewhere....basically had a choice of Paris, Frankfurt/Munich or Moscow as direct flights from here...been to France a bunch of times, not especially interested in either Frankfurt or non-Oktoberfest Munich....so Russia it was. Great trip, really enjoyed it.

What'd you do? How was the smog?

Hung out in St Petersburg for about 4 days, SPB is a great guide...from there we flew down to Moscow, did the Kremlin/Red Square thing. Got to Moscow the day after the smog cleared, so, while everyone was talking about it, didn't see it for myself. It was insanely hot (and this from an Australian who lives in South East Asia...I know heat...and Russia has it right now). Had a fantastic time, highly recommended. Only downside was the giant (and costly) pain in the ass that is the visa....

Good timing. What's so horrible about the visa process?

I'm Australian, which typically makes me a low risk visa applicant - ie fill out a form, they let you in. Russia, not so. Russia requires a written invitation from a hotel/tour company in Russia to process the visa. Vietnam (where I live) is a high risk country (ie people likely to visit and vanish once they get there), so they needed that as an original. Since I did it all at the last minute, it ended up with a friend in Russia having to race all over town to pay off a tour company to get me the invite letter (purchased for $50), express it to me (over $100), and then process the visa here ($110). Then, on arrival, you have to return to the issuing company for further processing, at which point, another certificate is presented, at a further cost of 950 roubles (about $30 more) and with another two days processing time. It is a giant ass pain to all, compounded by where I live and the speed I needed it done at. Was kind of stressful actually.

Jesus that sounds awful. Well, at least you had a good trip to make up for it.
