no, just back down to Saigon. Was in Hanoi for three days on business. Made it now...2.5 hours late, but home and hosed nonetheless.

May go back to Australia around May next year, see the fam.

Yesterday night I was doing some work for a project while trying not to fall asleep. However, I did some rolling earlier this week.

On Wednesday I arrived in Montreal and went to Chinatown to grab lunch and, later on, bubble tea with a friend. After that, I had an happy hour party downtown and then went to meet a friend for dinner and ate ribs. Then I met up some other friends, had a couple of beers at their place, tried a bar in their rather trendy Plateau area and crashed on one of their bed.

On Thursday, I took a look at the Museum of Fine Arts, went shopping with a friend downtown Montreal, went for dinner with two med school girls and then met up with three good friends as we first went to a micro-brewery and then to some bar where the law students who had just written their bar exam (one of my friend included) gathered. Crashed at one of my friend's place in the suburbs. The said friend lost his coat over there. We had celebrated quite a bit.

Today, though, the real rolling is beginning. Athens tomorrow and then Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa, the Dead Sea, Masada, etc. are all awaiting me. I can't wait to leave.

Once in a while an evening comes along that I want absolutely no part of. Saigon Santarchy 2008 was just such an evening. This time of year friends are kinda at a premium however, as a lot of people head home for the holidays. A bunch of the guys that were still here signed themselves on for a dressed-as-Santa-drunken-carolling-pub-crawl. No thanks. I went along and met them at the first bar, tagged along to the second (not dressed up, which raised their ire slightly) and then fled to my gf's house. She is snowed under at work, so just wanted to stay in. Lounged around her house and watched American Pie. Slept. Quiet weekend....

...Whereas on the other hand, sometimes there are evenings that you really, really wish you were going to be in Budapest for Cinetrip is back. An original Turkish bath turns into a wet, bikini-clad disco. I'm hoping this is going to be back on the monthly schedule, and not just a one-hit deal.

Friday night - Dep Fashion Show. My gf's sister is a fashion designer, the Dep Fashion Show (dep literally means 'beautiful', but in this case is the name of a fashion mag, the Vogue of VN if you will) is probably the biggest fashion event of the year, any gf's sister was one of the 5 featured designers. As much as tormenting The Sister is a hobby of mine - it is quite an honor to be a featured designer. Unfortunately, VN being VN, The Sister's section got cut short. She was supposed to be doing swimwear as well as evening wear, but the friendly people of the Social Evils Board of the Ministry of Culture and Information decided it was too risque, and pulled it all. Sucked for her, since it was half her collection. She propped it up as best she could with stuff from her own and from my gf's closet, which was kinda cool, since I had the gf squeezing my hand saying 'that's the dress I was wearing the night we met, remember?' 'uhh...yeah honey....course I do.' Personally I find fashion shows to be ridiculously boring (once the novelty wears off), but anyhow, gotta support. GF's mother is in town at the moment too, so really the highlight for me was watching the looks of pride on her and my gf's face when they paraded out The Sister at the end, gave her flowers etc. For anyone interested and/or able to read it...here is a link. The other highlight were the looks of bemusement/horror when they gave out the thank-you gift at the end. I went to a Cartier launch the other week, they gave out chocolate as a gift. I just refused to organise a Furla launch, gift to be wine...so this is an indication of audience expectations. Dep Fashion Show thank you gift, presented in a bag, "quite heavy...ooh whats inside?" ...a carton of milk and a four pack of yoghurt. Seriously...wtf? Maybe it is to encourage the models to eat. Personally, next year, I am hoping they give me a live duck. Will be about as convenient to carry to after parties as well. Went from there to a late night Chinese restaurant, which was chock full of all the girls (~80) from the show. Was a good place to be. Then to the after party, at a lounge bar called Xu. I like Xu, and the owner is a friend, but for some reason, events they throw there never seem to really come off. I totally dont know why. I have probably been to 8 or 9 things there now, ranging from DJ nights to wine tastings...none of them have ever really clicked, despite ostensibly having all the elements in place. Dep Fashion Show After Party similarly died within an hour of the end of the show. As we walked in post-Chinese food, most people were making for the door....even despite the free drinks, it was a hollow room in very short time. Probably my fault. Moved to a club called Bounce (which ended up being more of an After party than the actual after party) but didnt stay long there, home around 1. Sat night stayed in, watched a movie.

Rolling is looking fairly distant at the moment.

Elections (the quaint term we continue to use in these parts) have just been concluded here in Kenya. A pretty dodgy conclusion to the process has resulted in a 6PM curfew until further notice.

I have been here for a number of years, love the place, love the people, but things are grim right now.

All live broadcasts have been banned. (Mrs. Nugget is a newsanchor here, so at least we'll get to be alone together after 6!!).

Roll on next Sunday for flight out to HK and then to Aus.

I remember being around for Moi's election into his last term...it's absolutely dread. Be safe!

What station does Mrs. Nugget work for? KTN?

yep. KTN. Sorry removed the quote for fear of googlings...

It is pretty tense, lots of troops around. I picked her up tonight and it is very spooky in town.

This is worse than Moi, because the democratic space had been growing and maturing, it is also one community vs. the rest of the country...

No shops open.... very little wine (or food) in the house. I'll have to go all Hemingway and watch the next week unfold from the Norfolk whilst drinking gin.

I love this thread. Fascinating. My night thankfully did not involve troops nor dodgy elections. Im saving those up for New Years

Spent most of my Sunday at X Cafe using the wifi and catching up on some work. Free unsecured/not telco-subscription-locked wifi everywhere is one of the best things about VN's cafe culture. Other-country wifi drives me crazy whenever I travel.

Anyhow, then went to meet the gf at her sister's new shop, and went with her over to Bobby Brewers, which is a cafe in the backpacker district where they have converted the third floor into a screening room.

Met up with a friend who is visiting from Singapore, went and saw the mediocre Bucket List (only because it was on at the time).

Dropped gf home, went to a club called Alibi to meet forum-member whacked, who spent the weekend in Saigon for some Ultimate Frisbee tournament.

The frisbee boys were having their end of tournament after party there. Had a couple of drinks with whacked and assorted other friends who I bumped into there. I am not part of the Ultimate fraternity, but there were a couple of mad cute women among them, so perhaps I should rethink my sporting life! Anyhow, it seemed like a good time was being had by all, although I left pretty early.

whacked - how did it all pan out?

Friday December 21-Saturday December 22
Set out at 12am with the girl in our rented Chevy HHR for Georgia. Our first target was Atlanta. We drove straight through in shifts and made excellent time. We arrived in Atlanta around 2:30pm the next day at Peachtree city where we planned on staying with her mom & her husband until Christmas. The only incident on the way up was my fault. On the Tappanzee (sp) bridge in NY there is a small toll. The sign says "All lanes EZ pass accepted" so I figured it was a fast drive through with no gate but no, they all had gates. I flew through at around 20mph and went right through the gate. I always wondered what happens when you go through. It turns out that the gate bounced off your window and over the car. I paid the toll through so I don't think I got any penalties, I guess I'll find out in the next month or so. I was pretty embarrased but we both had a good laugh at the same time, it's something that I typically would never do.

Peachtree city, GA, our first destination, is an interesting place. It's about 45 minutes from downtown Atlanta, everyone owns a golf cart (which you can drive to any store in town on marked paths), there isn't a highway within 25 minutes, and there is little in the way of anything to do, other than to hang out at Walmart which seems to be the local family outing.

Sunday December 23
We left around 10am and drove the 45 minutes to the ghetto in Atlanta to attend Christmas mass. It was a small church in a basement of a building with ~ 25 parishoners, all of which where of some spanish decent and most of which knew little to no English. I fit in perfect because my Spanish consists of small phrases of greetings and nothing else. Luckily my girl speaks fluently. I was greeted warmly by everyone and used my "como estas?" and "mucho gustos" on the crowd while getting by with a smile. It was a very welcoming church, much different than my typical Roman Catholic church where everyone repeats in a robotic fashion. People spoke from the heart and nothing was planned.

After mass I had a cuban sandwich made by the church and some flan, which was most excellent. I've also come to realize that most people down south drink soda and not water for some reason and rarely soda of the diet variety.

After mass we went over my girl's aunt's house which was around 45 minutes away (again). They were 5 of the parishioners in the mass we just exited. We hung out for around an hour, all with small talk with those who spoke English well. They decided to go out to a buffet in the area for the Sunday lunch/dinner, probably to keep the costs low with such a large group. My girl's uncle a liutanant colonel in the army, paid for the whole meal which was nice of him.

It was your typical buffet, mediocre food and a strange crowd dotted mostly consisting of the Sunday church African American crowd wearing their purple and yellow 5 button suits and women wearing abnormally large hats. We represented the hispanic demographic of the restaurant. We left and I was dragged to Walmart to "hang out" or perhaps to join the legions of the Walmart cult in peachtree city.

Monday December 24
I woke up late and had some cheese and crackers for lunch (her mom has literally no food in their house) and that would have to due until dinner which was to be at the aunt's house once again.

We decided to do a "Dirty Santa" game for Christmas eve which consists of buying a gift between $10-15, wrapping it, then picking a number. You then open a gift or you can exchange with a person who has already opened it. They played a bit different where you have to have a girl 3 times to get it. I spent $20 on some nice headphones (which was stupid in hindsight) at Target while my girl bought some crazy monkey slippers (which ended up being a hit as well).

We went to the aunt's house around 6pm, were the last ones to arrive, and started mingling with the other people which numbered around 12. We sat down for dinner around 7:30pm which was a great home cooked spanish meal consisting of pasteles, arroz con habichuelas, pork, potato salad, and some crazy Puerto Rican blood sausage. I skipped that one because bleached pig intenstines filled with a mixture of meat and blood just didn't appeal to me. I was stuffed because I must have eaten 2cups of rice and beans but they shoved move food in my face as dinner ended they promptly moved to dessert #1 with arroz con dulce. Now I'm ready to burst but there is no saying no with this family.

We finally get to the Dirty Santa game around 9pm and it was a blast. My gift was a hit as expected and was the first to get picked 3 times. With the luck of the draw I was last to pick and got stuck with some horrible plastic waterfall from Walmart but I made a joke out of it and had everyone on the floor laughing. I had her grandma in tears. I didn't honestly expect to get a great gift for $10-15. My girl and I ended up at the end of the game with a tool set and a bottle set which I gave to her mom. It was a fun time.

We then played some wii bowling and then had dessert #2 which was more flan. It was good but pushed my limits once again. They asked if I wanted another soda and when I asked for water they looked at me like I had pink polka dots on my face.

The rest of the night I was talking with people, watching them open gifts, and eat even more as the Christmas eve marathon lasted until 4am!!! I was ready to pass out around 12am but somehow summoned the energy to last just long enough.

Tuesday December 25
Christmas was very simple. We stayed in at the mom's house, I ate some more cheese and crackers for lunch and we went to see I am Legend at the theater (along with I am guessing 90% of the town).

Wednesday December 26
Today my girl and I left Atlanta, Peachtree City, and Walmart once and for all to head to Savannah GA to visit my uncle. We left around 9am and headed down the boring stretch of no-man's land known as Route 16. My uncle told me to head to a place called Metter, GA and find a restaurant named Jo-Max. We found it around 12:30 that day and my girl really got her taste of the southern accent. It was a local "joint" that wreaked of bbq from the parking lot. We both had bbq pork sandwiches which were pretty good but the service was just awful and the drinks were watered down. They were severely understaffed but I guess it was better than KFC or Wendy's across the street.

We reached Savannah, my old stomping ground during college, around 2pm and I was immediately surprised at how much Savannah had changed. They are really pouring money into the city and I saw at least 10 new hotels in the downtown area and lots of higher end stores. We walked around Broughton St. and the shops for a while and then headed out to the islands to stay at my uncle's place and visit my aunt and their children.

That night we went out to dinner at a local fish restaurant, which had a killer salmon and fried fish basket and then for some home-made ice cream.

Thursday December 27
I woke up early and talked with my uncle and their family at length and we all sat down to a home cooked breakfast. Around 1pm we left and started our sight seeing tour of Savannah so I could show my girl all the spots.

Frist we headed out to Tybee island to the pier at the beach and took some photos. Nearby we climbed to the top of the lighthouse and took some more photos, great view. Heading back towards town we stopped for a couple hours at a local fort from the 19th century which was really great. It injected some history into our trip.

I then took her to the shopping area on Abercorn St. and this new store recommended by my uncle called La Villa which sells lots of higher end knick knacks. My girl bought some serving tray for her friend for xmas.

Next we headed downtown to show her The Sentient Bean, the local favorite coffee shop, ExLibris (the college bookstore), some of the local parks, and of course the famous River St. We walked along River St. for a good couple hours, had dinner at Huey's on the river and then went for some home made Gelatto. We sent out some postcards to our family and friends and after a quick tour of the Savannah ghetto to end the week we headed over the bridget to drive home.

The plan was to leave Savannah around 6pm but we didn't leave until 9pm and it hurt us on the way home but we pushed through and made it. We had to be home at 4:15PM Friday to deliver the rental car. We got there at 3:50 after washing the car and filling it with fuel, drove home and slept for 15hours.

8 days and 2650 miles later, a great trip.

Visionology - sounds a great road trip...

Bizarre day here.

Woken up by gun fire, which has remained sporadic throughout the morning.

It is all very surreal..

We've run out of bread and stuff, the city is deserted with the exception of troops.

I am reading SF to try and figure out what I want to order at WW Chan a week from now, how to get my new blazer cut and by whom http://www.styleforum.net/showthread.php?t=51745 , what Jantzen fabric will do the job, and if a couple pairs of Zee's are in order.

Gunfire interrupts..

Kenyans are amazing people and even all this has been handled pretty pragmatically, the armed forces have been extremely gentle, a lot of buildings have been burnt down... lots of destruction, but an overall feeling that all will calm down.

Guess my NY eve fireworks will be for real. I'll be at home, obeying the curfew.

I hope you guys don't mind me using this thread for some therapeutic venting.

That's crazy, I would hate to be the postman that has to deliver your Jantzen order in the gunfire!
