Leg opening width

It seems that most suits in my size (42L) come default with leg openings of around 9 to 9.5 inches at the bottom. I wear pants with a slight or no break and cuffs, and maybe it's my imagination, but it seems wide in comparison to my 10D US shoes. Comparing my suits to the posters on what are you wearing right now, I wonder do people here routinely taper their pant legs down to a smaller opening? I am considering modifying this to 8 or 8.5 width but have had tailors tell me before that 9 is already quite tapered. The suits in question are RLPL, Isaia, Corneliani, and BB Fitzgerald model. Do skinny pant legs only work for mod style suits or fashion forward type short jacket designs?

Pants should be straight from knee or have slight taper. Skinny pant legs are stupid.

I always assumed that I had my pants too wide in the leg as well. I have one pair that I had tailored to be about 8 inches in width, and I do like them. I'm a big guy too, 6'3" 250.

Every pant leg I've attempted to converse with was beyond stupid, no reaction at all. Reading what you've posted in the last few days I guess it's a possibility that a barely smarter one finally found it's way on styleforum.

if you make a narrower bottom on the trousers you will have to shorten them. thats because the narrower bottom will rest on a higher point on your instep. this would give you a large break instead of a slight break.

I wouldn't mess with your pant legs. This is an unattractive fad and it will pass, hopefully soon.

In 8th grade we used to fold our pants lengthwise at the ankle and use a paperclip to fasten the fold. Some guys torqued it down so tight you wondered if blood could circulate.

The best part was the fold would unfurl up the inside of your leg to the knee, it looked incredibly bad.

Sounds reasonable to me, but how thin can you go before it starts to look really off. Do they make these pants somewhat wide by default just in case someone with huge feet buys the suit, or is this really the way it's supposed to be for everybody?

I always alter pants to taper them below the knee to 8.25''. I am a 30 waist and 140 pounds, so 8' may be too small for you. You it's less about shoe width and more about how big your calves/lower legs are. Pants look sloppy when they are so large in the leg that they swoosh around too mich when you walk. Ultimately there is no rule and it's entirely a question of taste. Costs me around $30 to alter
