Funny that you say that about the 70's, I have been thinking the same thing and then today I saw a story in the Times on James Rogers (of Quantum/Soros fund fame) talking about commodities. Had to laugh wondering what our friend the satorialist would have made of the staw hatted outfit Jim was sporting on the beach!

How long do the summer sales usually go for and how many mark downs are ther?

I was at Barneys on 6/1 and everything on sale looked to be 40-50% off.

Sales will now last, albeit at varying degrees of discount, through Labor day.

I am starting to warm to Barney's - particularly their ties. One of the few to carry Drakes ties (Jay Kos is the other). Bergdof's overall selection is just sublime.

The deepest discounts or final reduction usually start around early to mid July, but sizes and selections will be limited by then. By early August, all sale stocks will be off the floor replaced by fall/winter merchandize. Barneys warehouse sale starts in mid August and lasts thru Labor weekend.

And of course just my luck, what I wanted wasn't on sale or I should say rather what I found and bought wasn't on sale. After looking through a bunch of "same old-same old" stuff on 6, I spied these great unconstructed cotton and or linen jackets (white, navy, or brown). They were Italian with a great close cut and reminded me of the Fay jacket I picked up in Milan while I was there for the furniture fair a couple of months ago. By the way, I am obsessed with Fay now! Anyway, the jackets were just what I was hoping to find and they were clearly selling well on their own so they didn't feel the need to add them to the sale mix. There were only a few of the brown left. Remarkably, there was a 38r available in both the navy and the brown though, much to my wife's dismay, not anymore.

Still some things left on 3 at Bergdorfs in larger sizes especially. Almost bought an Etro suit that was marked down to $975.00, but had the Barneys jackets still on my mind at the time. First and second floor not going on sale for another two weeks.

BG sale; Vass calf loafer ~$600. Cordovans ~$990. U last not on sale.

Tommorow, the remaining stock goes on discount. Buy two, get the third for half off. Stock is pretty limited. I picked up a comfy pair of summer sandals, for a good, not great, price of $49. Belts for little people were also a pretty good deal--3 for $50. I needed two casual belts for my wardrobe, so this seemed to be a good buy as any...

Got up early to study and hit the BOSS sample sale before the NY dinner.

Suits: $629?? for Baldessarini
$400ish for mainline crap and the Selection pieces (the latter being a decent deal)

Sportcoats: $279 for mainline and Selection. Again, the selection pieces are half canvassed, and a decent value at that price. A few cashmere pieces mixed into the lot.
$479 for Baldessarini (there is a nice tan 100% cashmere in 38r)

Shoes: No C&J. Dont bother.

Shirts: Baldessarini still $99. I might stop by on the last day to check for reductions, otherwise I've had better luck at the outlets.

EDIT: I left empty-handed... which is a good thing.

Given the number of outfitters that have or will launch summer sales in the next few weeks (RL, BB, T&A, Barneys, BG, EG) your discipline will serve you well. I felt the same way about Asprey a couple of weeks ago.

Has anyone been to the T&A sale today?

How's the selection? Only wild designs? What about ties, cashmere, socks, leather goods, etc.?
