No, it's not as extreme as many, but it is a split, and I have friends who train with me that do the typical chest - arms - legs - back - shoulders and they do great.

It's not really a question of what works, but really what's most effective.

The point is that neither are the be all end all of training and both have their pros and cons, and calling splits "meat headed" and "retarded" when the strongest men in the world use them is pretty silly. Neither is more effective than the other.

It depends on goals, but most splits lack athleticism and in the OP's case doing one is retarded.

And they're very meatheadish.

starting strength. look no further than that.

And what makes them meatheadish? I never said splits would be good for the OP... just want to discern your notion of splits being shit; personally I think it's because you probably read a few T-Nation articles by Chad Waterbury and Mens Health forum posts by a bunch of guys who are benching 150 pounds. I'm just saying they aren't meatheadish at all; they're an effective way of stimulating growth and strength. I am just getting tired of the 150 pounders coming up and saying "You're training wrong" after I rack up 3x their bodyweight. (please don't take my post as hostile, just saying)

Wow, have some fucking humility. You're arguing that a pejorative, undefined term is untrue because you have had some success with what's kinda-sorta like a split. Don't worry about efficacy at all -- this is an Internet argument -- we compare our personal, unverified 1RM to determine what's the best training program for a totally different third party.

For me the most effective way to train is as follows: Every day I do one oly lift or varation thereof and then split my training into Hip or Knee Dominant movments. Vertical push or pull and Horizontal push or pull. I then split that into either unilateral or bilateral movements. I took the routine from Coach Dos' book "Men's Health Power Training" and have found it to be a very effective workout: http://www.amazon.com/Mens-Health-Po.../dp/1594865841

I actually use a single side of the body split.

M&Th: Left-legged squat, left-handed pull-up, left-handed press, and left-handed curl.

T&F:Right-legged squat, right-handed pull-up, right-handed press, and right-handed curl.

So i'll just take that as a dodge? Don't knock a training style just because you don't like it. It is greatly effective for a huge percentage of the population. I am arguing that I am quite familiar with splits and those who do them, and that they aren't retarded. I am not trying to be egotistical at all, just giving you my personal opinion and experience (isn't that part of the use of a forum) and I addressed what I thought OP should do earlier. Don't get so worked up about it. And relax, it's an internet forum.

I don't think he's really trying to dodge you here. The issue here is what is meant by 'split routine.' Your 'split' isn't quite like the vast majority of dudes who go to the gym and do the "chest and tris day" and pretty much shun compound movements like squats/deads. Hell, you're doing oly lifts which puts you in a small minority of gym-goers. When you're talking about two different things, arguments will mostly be talking past each other. For most applications, his explanation earlier is the best answer.

I agree with him having a good answer, but it's more so my experiences with training partners that make me laugh at calling a split retarded, and I just wanted to address that. Sure if we are talking about a split with no deadlift or squat I agree. But I agree; I am done discussing it. Obviously we won't see eye to eye but maybe he'll be a little less critical.
