Seems like a social networking dressed in a work tie.

I was going to say the exact same thing. It's basically Facebook.

Yes.

This will decrease productivity in any workplace it's introduced to.

Having worked in some of the more anal IT Depts I would hate to deal with the "Corporate" ver of this. Having to keep conversations and attachements a la AIM Corp on the SAN is going to be a killer.

This looks sick. Real time collaboration, for free! We used to have to pay big bucks for something 1/100 as good.

Alright, it's been months. The question is: has anyone discovered an actual point to Google Wave yet?

I'm guessing no. Because there is none.

^ They made a nifty wave illustrating how the Declaration of Independence would have been created on Wave. Also D&D nerds love this shit, so there is a use. Without wide spread membership there is no real world use yet.

And assuming widespread membership?

I mean, is editing documents in real-time really that important? I am sure it is in some professions, but for most people it simply isn't. For the average gmail user, I fail to see the upgrade even at critical mass.

Its a conversation anyone can join at anytime and replay. Widespread membership allows timewasters, tweens, and social network whore to dig in and find a way to pejoratise it. Once it goes to shit everyone will love it.

Alright, I can see how self-absorbed internet tweeting poopies will enjoy it. I was wondering if there was a real point to it, and it seems like the answer is not really. I don't need a "replay of a chat".

Compare to gmail - which actually improved the average user experience, primarily via:

Embedded and discreet chat within the e-mail interface
Threaded discussions
Excellent search functionality
More user-friendly labeling

Honestly, it really does seem like more or less a waste of time and technology to me. Real-time editing etc...what's the point? Seriously, except for a few niche markets that I can't even think of (I'm just assuming they're there), what does this do that current technologies don't? In fact, real-time editing could get some people into trouble!

Truth. I can't count the number of times I was writing a document to some bigshot and typed out "XYZ SUCKS BIG DICK HAHAHAHAHHAHA BITCH" and then pressed ctrl-Z to undo. Google Wave would get me fired.
