Im not going to get one on a regular saturday at home, but if im at a hotel and having fun blowing my rent, why not? Thats part of the experience right?

How long does this toxin-shock last?

Massages are great. I'd suggest that immediately after you get one to drink a ton of water and take a nap.

For instance, the Swedish Massage is the basic, but what does that entail? Is that a painful one or just a nice little rubdown? What is the best entry level type to get?

Yes, you can ask them to vary the intensity, within the framework of what they're doing. But not all massages are the same. Swedish, a mix of kneading and long, gliding strokes, is a good starter massage, though I've had some that were unsatisfyingly soft despite my best efforts. Some masseuses just aren't comfortable doing deeper work, or lack the strength to really deliver the goods. But for your first one, you probably don't want something so probing anyway.

Many people love Swedish, so it may be right up your alley. But if you go gentle for the first one and don't find it satisfying, don't give up on it. You might try some deeper tissue work, and maybe a different masseuse -- as in anything, some are better than others.

I like the euphoric release of endorphins when it is over and you're trying to make it back home. It's hard to realize how tense you are until you're walking around relaxed thanks to the massage.

This is not true in Vegas. All of the big resorts have full service spas with a full time staff. The people you get are employees of the hotel spa.

Not sure that matters to your point, which seems to be that the hotel massages are over-priced, with which I certainly agree. However, I tend to think that in Vegas I'm willing to pay a bit of a premium to reduce my hassle factor...YMMV.

Is this true? My BS meter goes off when I read stuff like this.

Nope that's the truth. Massages are designed to get rid of the toxin build up in your muscles. One of the reasons your legs feel heavy and tired after a long run. Loads of toxins and acids sitting in them, unable to get out as it's almost impossible to get rid, even with a warm down.

Also, watch out for stairs after a massage! I once nearly fell flat on my face after a deep tissue massage as it weakens your muscles for a few hours.

So you think there is a ton of acid and poison and germs in your muscles, you press on them, and they get released into your blod and then...you pee your blood out? Where do people come up with this stuff?

Blood is filtered through your kidneys.

Indeed. Any time the word "toxins" is used, you can probably bet you're hearing some pseudoscience.

$140 for 50 minutes is pretty steep. I've typically paid $60/hour with the cheapest being $39/hour and $90/hour once when I took my wife to a frou-frou day spa.

I tend to agree, however, a deep massage of tender muscles could cause myoglobin leakage from the cell into the plasma. Drinking water would help the kidneys deal with that. If your muscles are not tender then that's not likely.

+1, I just had one today, it was painful because I have an injury and is part of the treatment, but I felt great afterwards.
