Maybe my tastes are off.

What alternatives would you put forward? In other words, what bags do you like?

Hermès Sac à Depêche Porosus.

Also Jack Spade, Want Les Essentiels

I guess if this was my look, then it would work for me. However, in my opinion it doesn't look very professional with a suit going to a business meeting.

I tend to like leather bags even though I am currently carrying a leather (with some dark brown waxed canvas) computer bag by Andrew Marc.

I'll be carrying one of two laptops (either a 15" work laptop or a thin-as-hell 13" MacBook Air), my lunch, and sunglasses, that sort of thing, basically.

Would the 256 suffice? I have a larger weekend bag for short trips where I need to bring clothes and things like that, so this would be strictly for work.

While a 257 is larger than a 256, it is not a weekend bag. Part of that is because of the bag's capacity, but also the way the pockets and compartments are laid out...it won't work well for clothes.

Jack Spade looks way more hipster imo since every single person in SF has a Jack Spade bag. The filsons aren't meant to be a super formal bag. It's a classic American design and relatively clean.

Also I think the Want bags look like they should only be for women. Something about the way they are cut and the colors. Great quality, just not "manly."
