If you are going to Newport I recommend Soundings or as someone else said-- sitting outside at Black Pearl. Also Second Beach in front of St. George's School is very pretty. You can also go to Bellvue Ave. and look at the Mansions. Cliffwalk is also very cool.
Also you can go to Sakonnet Vineyard (technically in Portsmouth I think) or Newport Vineyards and do a wine tasting.
If you are in Providence-- I recommend going to Federal Hill and walking around and looking for a place to eat. I haven't been in a while- but almost all the Italian places are very good. Capriccio's downtown also has good italian. If you are on the east side, take a walk down Thayer St. or visit Wickenden St. and get coffee at Coffee Exchange or one of the 99 beers at Wickenden Pub.
PM me if you want to know more or have more specific questions.

There's a great restaurant called New Rivers, I forget the address but it's just down the hill from Brown and RISD.
It's good.
