But the culture here is that you provide everything. People don't expect a BYOB affair so it gets expensive unless you do an ironic dinner party with mac n cheese or something.

I used to host the dinners too, but now its more of a "whoever has time, go buy the ingredients". And the ones that dont buy the ingredients or cook, normally just take us out for dinner once in a while. Works out quite well.

i haven't been to any dinner parties that weren't just come over and cook. - but that's probably an age group thing. in my opinion, pot lucks (and bbq's) seem to be successful and fun affairs.

We tried pot lucks a few times, but sometimes the food is just random and dont go well together. But if it works for you, great. We just always ended up a bunch of sides and a single "main". hahaha...

We tend to have/or get invited to a lot of potlucks. They are quite a bit of fun, and make for good meals that don't cost any one person an arm and a leg.

Among my friends and family, the host usually provides the meal. I can't recall the last time I attended a potluck.

+1. To me, potlucks have always meant church meals or family reunions.

Love to invite people over but my place in Manhattan is too small, can't really do that...

I have heard that this is the reason Parisians spend so much time in cafes and bistros. Their tiny little apartments aren't really suitable for entertaining..
