Theres nothing like inviting good friends over for a nice dinner. My family likes to invite people over and its great. Good food and discussion. Nowadays its a lost tradition yes?

I show off my culinary skills when I invite friends over for dinner. I invite friends for dinner about once a month. The latest was a southern Spanish theme. I served Arroz a la Valenciana and ended it off with Flan de Leche. For those daring enough, I served Alamid coffee.

What do you show off more? The Entree or Dessert?

I have people over for dinner sometimes. I don't really show off much, anymore. When I started cooking, I really wanted to impress people and I think doing it for that attention and adrenaline rush is a lot of what made me want to keep doing it. Now I'm at the point where I care less about people going head over heels for my food and I just want them to be fully satisfied by the time they're done.

I had a dinner party last night for close friends who had returned to town after an extended stay elsewhere. It was a rather simple meal held outside on a gorgeous May evening. It was lots of fun.

I just wikipedia-ed that. It sounds like a jambalaya sort of thing right?

^^^It's nothing like a jambalaya. Arroz a la Valenciana is Aroborio rice and the secret really is in the stock. I use real saffron threads and living in L.A., I don't have a shortage of good seafood. I use a well seasoned paella pan that I don't put in the dishwasher. Think cast iron, so all the flavors are sealed in the pan itself. I cook with passion and I think I get pleasure from seeing the joy from my guests from the food I serve them. Always with Sangria , of course.

LT- My family loves to have dinner parties and other gatherings. I try to do the same thing as well as have events in my store. I don't think its a lost thing at all.

Most of my guests are not so much guests but co-cooks. My friends come over quite often and they even started cooking in my kitchen. It goes well though. It started off as a weekly, cook-off/ dinner party. But now its more casual and just an excuse to get together with close friends with some good food. Because we arent trying to impress each other another, we usually try new things and new recipes...

Same with my friends. We often try new recipes and sometimes we fail horribly. It' all part of the fun. No attempts or need to impress.

I used to do it when I had the money. Loved it.

But the culture here is that you provide everything. People don't expect a BYOB affair so it gets expensive unless you do an ironic dinner party with mac n cheese or something.

Same. We have been trying pulled pork. We tried it about 4 times now and it is slowly getting better. It's a good excuse to get some talk time in.
