Anyone know about this car? I found a really good deal with low mileage and just trying to do some research. I heard that the '99-'00 models were lemons, but not sure about 2002.

I have one. We love it.
Ours has about 80K on it and it is strong as ever.
I recomend it.

I have a 2001 V70 Turbo (not AWD) wagon. I bought mine a year old with a lot of highway mileage. The first year of ownership was a disaster, with lots of front-end trouble. It was all covered by the warranty. Eventually, they just replaced the front end and the car has been fine ever since.

Much of what little driving I do iscCity driving, so I tend to spend a lot on maintenance - alignment, brake wear, etc. Don't know if that experience would apply to you.

The only other problem I had was that the car would stall repeatedly on the West Side Highway. The first time it happened, it was terrifying, as it was mid-traffic with no warning. I managed to pull over, put my family on the sidewalk and got ready to take the car in. But it restarted o.k. , so I drove it home. This happened again a week later, then again. I noticed that it was in the same spot on the highway, each time. It turns out that likely some piece of equipment that was being used near the Intrepid museum must have interfered with the car's electrical system. Next time I went by, I drove in the furthest lane and was fine. Whatever it was is gone and the problem has never recurred.

Weird, but I assume not something you need worry about.

BTW, I think Volvo V70 Wagon is an absolutely beautiful design. I am less thrilled about the AWD trim - or maybe it is just the XC package trim - as it seems to bulk the design up.

Thanks for the replys. I'll run by the dealer tomorrow and inspect the car with my mechanic. If it checks out, I'll make an offer.

Btw, what kind of gas do you put in it? They recommend premium but I want to see if I can get away with regular.

Never tried anything that didn't meet the minimum octane recommendation (91, I think).

Have an 95 850 turbo wagon with like 300K miles(broken odometer). Still my daily driver. Rear main seals leak on these (about $1200 - 1800). Evaporators (AC). Some very good volvo forums will give you much info. brickboard mathews etc

I have an S60 T5 (basically the same car, just the sedan version). I recommend finding a good neighborhood mechanic, as parts are expensive and the dealer markup is even worse Dealer labor is also insane. However, the parts are no more expensive than any other luxury car (BMW, Audi, Mercedes...). I bought it from the original owner who did every scheduled maintenance on time and they said problems were minimal. Scheduled maintenance is key in any car - do it on time and things should go smoothly. I've had no problems what-so-ever - it's a great car. What engine does the V70 have? The non-turbo 2.4l is a dog - can barely get out of it's own way. The 2.4T is better and the T5 247hp engine is the best. It's fun and economical. A major service is the timing belt and water pump which should be done at 80-90k and at ~90k intervals from then on.

If it's the non-turbo engine, I don't see why you'd have to use premium. However, I'd never put anything less than premium in a turbo engine.

Thanks all for the input. It is a 2.4L engine, and at 81k miles. I'm going to the dealer tomorrow and checking it out by a Volvo mechanic. I'll keep the belt and pump in mind.

The economy sucks, ask them to cover you by extending the warranty by an extra year or two or 25K miles, beyond what it already has.
That should cover the crazy shit, should it go bad.

2005 V70 2.5T. Purchased in April from Volvo for 17k, not including the 4 year warranty. It had 21k at time of purchase. I've been really happy with everything about the car, practical with a decent amount of power, more features than the 2006 BMW wagon I was also looking at and 7k cheaper.

We had a 1999 XC70 and replaced it with a 2008 when that got totaled. Not a perfect car, but it suits our needs pretty well in that department.

A few electrical bugs, and a very thirsty engine were the main problems with the old one-- which predated the new sheet metal with the rear fenders.

This reminds me - I really think this is a beautiful design. I hope they don't screw with it much when they do the inevitable refresh.
