Raw Denim: Pros and Cons of Dry Cleaning vs. Wash

Thread Starter
I have an 8 month old pair of raw denim I wear about 2 days a week and its getting pretty stinky, to the point I can smell a funk when I wear and Im sure others can too. (Ive tried Lysol, febreeze, airing out for days, and nothing gets rid of it)

Can someone please explain the pros and cons of dry cleaning vs hand soaking/washing jeans and which is the most effective at preserving the deep color and starchy shine, yet eliminate the odor?

thanks

I'm going to try hard to not say that there's already an appropriate thread for this where this question has been answered on several occasions... real hard. Why don't you read this: http://www.styleforum.net/showthread...ht=denim+guide

the reason teh smell comes back is when you air them out the bacteria hybernate but as soon as you wear them the heat from your body activates the bacteria/smell. An 8 month pair of raw denim is neither dark nor shiny (assuming you frequently wear them) so I don't see the point in not washing them. anyway wear your jeans like a man, which includes washing them as soon as others can smell your funk.

Roll them up, put them in a big Ziploc bag and throw them in the freezer overnight. Problem solved.

This is only a temporary fix, for what it's worth, as most bacteria that are responsible for "funkiness" in your clothes are tolerant of extremes in heat or cold. They'll just hibernate/encapsulate when in the freezer, then thaw back out when you wear the jeans.

Sooner or later you're going to have to wash them. Do it by hand if that makes you feel better, but wash them you must. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how deep and lustrous the indigo on your raw denim jeans still is after a year; if the jeans smell like ass, nobody's going to care.

Unless you want them to stay as dark as possible, I don't subscribe to the dry cleaning is better idea. If thats the case you shouldn't be wearing them 8 months straight anyway. Wash your damn jeans.

If you really don't want to wash them you could turn it inside out and spray wtih febreze antimicrobial and let it air out but wash them shits

it's funny though people who dno't wash get crotch tears much faster because ballsweat eats up the cotton. people who wsah their jeans all the time have them last forever.

That's a fallacy.

Thats a phallusy.

But seriously, thats retarded. There's a middle ground. Wash them every time you wear them, jeans are going to be thread bare and falling appart in a few years time tops in most cases. Never wash them and wear them everyday, you will probably blow them out.

The thing people never take into account is that people who wash and wear like normal, only wear that pair maybe once, twice maybe three times a week where as people who wear raw for months on end tend to wear them most of the time. apples and oranges.

+1....+2 rather!!! I mean, smell is where I draw the line. And I'm curious as to what the smell is. If it's "ball sweat", then that's just gross.

I've been breaking in my raws for 9 months now and they have no smell. Just recently went camping however, and the jeans absorbed the camp fire smoke. And even though the smoke smell has subsided, I'm still thinking of washing them soon.

I share all this to say....again....smell is where I draw the line. I agree whole heartedly with Dan G!

My point was that his argument assumed that all people wear their jeans through the same activities and for equal amounts of time so that the only possible factor between blowing out and not blowing out jeans had to do with the number of times washed.

It's a tiny bit of truth that has been misunderstood, wrongly interpreted, and then regurgitated as fact.

How can this even be a question? You got nine good months out of them. What's the worse that will happen if you do wash them? Sky will fall? Earth spin of its axis? If your so worried about the perfect new indigo look, just fucking throw them out and buy a new pair.
