Years of Work before MBA

I'm currently studying for the GMATs and need a little inspiration (it's friday night). When applying to top business schools, I understand the more experience the better.

That being said, I've been thinking that entry into a top school would be guaranteed by the following pairings:

1 year experience & GMAT 780
2 years & 730
3 years & 700
4 years & 680

tengo razon?

with the current economic situation and the rise in the app volume, 680 will be tough regardless.

But it all depends - on type of experience, minority status, etc..

Well like the previous response stated, with the economic situation that we are in, it will be harder to get in. However, experience is paramount. The scores are important, but what you have done gives you a great deal of separation from those just graduating. Good Luck.

GMAT is more of a toll gate. Its not like X points = a year of experience

Yep. When I did time, 5 years experience was average. 700ish gmats seemed to be average as well. There are lots of companies that don't interview unless you are 700+ gmat.

Defintely not that easy. A 680 is low no matter how you look at it, and things aren't extrapolated so neatly by years of work experience. The average GMAT and average work experience is 710 and 5 years... so there's no way your 4 years/680 would "guarantee" anything.

Quality of work experience, GPA, essays/letters of rec and your gender/ethnicity are all big factors.

Yep. Preferably one who grew up in some little town in Oklahoma, graduated magna cum laude from Yale, and now works at McKinsey in Buenos Aires or Santiago. The door to HBS is wide open.

As a followup, I took the GMATs a month ago and got a 760. According to my original and highly scientific scale, that means I could get into b-school with one and a half years of experience.

To continue my epic thread, I finished the GMAT and applied to three schools over the winter and spring. Just got some results back and now have some tough decisions to make.

What is everyone's opinion on Wharton vs. MIT for a finance career?
