Now, in a re-creation of that major upset, Le Clos Jordanne's Claystone Terrace 2005, an elegant Chardonnay from an upstart Niagara winery, has bested the world's most treasured wines at the Judgment of Montreal. The feat is akin to a precocious child winning a place among the Nobel elite.

Ummm, okay. Here's the tasting list:

1. Le Clos Jordanne Claystone Terrace 2005 88.8
2. Hubert Lamy Clos du Meix 1er Cru 2005 88.5
2. Rosemount Estate Roxburgh 1999 88.5
4. Jean-Claude Boisset Le Limozin 2006 88
4. Louis Jadot Clos de Malte 2005 88
6. Joseph Drouhin Clos des Mouches 2006 87.4
6. Kumeu River Estate 2006 87.4
8. Mer Soleil 2005 87.3
9. Sonoma-Cutrer les Pierres 2002 87.1
10. Chateau Montelena 2006 86.8
11. Mommessin 2 Terroirs 2006 85.5
12. J.N. Gagnard les Chaumes 2005 85.3
12. Arrowood 2004 85.3
14. La Soufrandiere les Quarts 2005 85.1

World's most treasured wines?

It's nice to see an Ontario wine maker put out a decent, if overpriced, Chard. But beat the world's best? *sigh* No one but nativists are ever going to take you seriously if you keep this up.

I've tried a couple of the chardonnays from Le Clos Jordanne and they're very nice. But the Canadian wine industry always seems to be overcompensating a little with competitions like this. Analyses of competition results have shown that they're basically meaningless, and nobody could take seriously an article that claims Ontario has produced the world's best chardonnay.

(FWIW, BC wines are generally much better than Ontario wines, but are no longer the bargains they once were.)

I treasure anything from Rosemount Estate - don't you???

It just struck me as pretty funny, that the article a) stated the comparison wines were the best in the world (they're not) and b) the redux on the 1976 tasting in Paris.

Again, happy to see a passable Chard come out of Ontario. Let's just not lose sight of the fact it is overpiced and just passable, not extraordinary.

On a related note, I think an Ontario icewine made the WS Top 100 this year. Barely, but it's there (#100 I think).

I had a marvelous ice wine not too long ago, like a '01 or '02 Ingelnook or whatever it is.

Iniskillin's icewines are fantastic. I was surprised to find them at my local Costco recently -- great price

Who cares, white wine

Clos makes a couple of very good Pinots. One of three or four top Ontario wineries. Most are average at best.

Im not much of wine drinker, but I like the icewines. But youll rarely see any Ontario wines outside of North America. When I was in Europe, no restaurant have Ontario wines on their wine lists.

I am a wine neophyte. Howyever, I do find it funny that no one has brought up British Columbia yet.

Why is that funny? They were not in the tasting, nor the topic of conversation.

I think, Piobaire, you will find this is an Ontario (specifically, a Toronto) problem rather than a Canadian one.

Good lord! That's like having a wine contest in Compton, CA and having the judges pick Colt .45 malt liquor the winner.
