"The Dandy" delayed

But this time it's good news, or at least for a good reason.

Some of you may recall that my book has already been delayed once, from spring 2005 to fall 2005, by my publisher. Well, now it is being delayed again, until spring 2006 -- by a new publisher.

This is bad news, because I really want the damned thing to come out. But it's good in that my new publisher is much bigger, with more resources, a better publicity machine, etc.

The title is still an issue with the new publisher. It may yet change. If it does, I'll make sure to let everyone know what the new title is.

I'm sorry to hear about the latest delay -- the iron is hot, I'm not sure why they are waiting to strike it -- but congratulations on the new publisher. Hopefully they put some weight behind this and push it hard.

I guess I just have trouble equating your choice of title with your choice of avatar. Niccolo wouldn't be caught dead carrying on about dandyism...

EDIT: Whatever the title I cannot wait to purchase. Congrats on the new and more formiable publisher.

You're not the only one.

Actually, take a look at the full portrait: http://www.d.umn.edu/~aroos/machiavelli.JPG He could be quite the dude when he wanted to be. But I basically agree that, for the most part, he had more important things on his mind. Like chasing women.

The new publisher is not waiting. We just completed the deal. There is no way for them to get the book out by fall. They could eek it out by Christmas, but all the pre-launch milestones for Christmas have already passed, so we would miss out on a lot of publicity. Better, they say, to target it for spring and use graduations/Father's Day as a hook.

No argument from me. I'm just glad to be with an outfit with some serious muscle. Plus, my new editor is a sharp-dressed dude.

sorry to hear about the delay, but I am looking forward to seeing it on the shelves next year, and I am happy that you are pleased with the muscle of the new publisher.

Well, I must confess my disappointment. Purchasing "The Dandy" was going to be one of the high points of my autumn (seriously.). Now I must wait another seven months or so.

Is there any chance that your new publisher, who you state has more resources, might be more amenable to a more lavish graphic package?

Yes, it looks like we will have a pretty decent illustration budget. I will be meeting soon to go over the possibilities.

Is that title final? I want this book, but I don't know if I'd want to leave it sitting out where others could see with that title.

EDIT: Wow, Harper Collins.

No, the title is not final. Collins' reaction is a lot like yours, actually.

Congratulations, Manton. I have not contributed very much here, but I have learnt very much here thanks to connaisseurs like you. I will definitely get your book. (and probably buy it as a gift to some firends who could really benefit from your knowledge).
