Best longwings? - Page 3

btw when I say old stock I mean dead stock new, ideally. worn shoes can get nasty

I love mine too! Every morning I take a second at the closet to look at them and fret that I can't wear them everyday. I like mafoofan's idea of the one shoe wardrobe more and more (well maybe one in #8 and one in cigar to mix it up as well).

I could easily have an all longwings wardrobe of shoes, but in different colors.

FWIW, the best longwings aren't longwings. Hard to beat PRL Darlton in shell or in chestnut pebble grain w/ leather or Dainite sole if you want a derby wingtip.

Yes, the RL Darlton shell wingtips are nice. I still reach for and prefer my Aldens though; in fact, I haven't worn my Darltons in about a year.

Just to be clear, when you guys re talking Florsheim, you're only talking about deadstcok, right? Why don't more companies make pebble shoes anymore?

Get them. My Cigar and #8 are worn as often as my black longwings. Oddly my least worn color is my favorite, Whiskey.

I noticed that Tom at Leather Soul had some Ravello shell longwings, I saw them yesterday and e-mailed him but he said they were sold out in my size,oh man,I wish he had them in 11D

Well, carmel doesn't have them in stock either.Did you get the Ravello from Tom? Carmel is supposed to have Ravello in October but with crepe soles.

I have the RL Darlton shell wingtips too. They are nice, but I have to say, the C&J shell is much more delicate than the Alden. I'm not sure if anyone else has experience with this, but those shoes scratch much more easily that my other shell shoes. That said, they still look good with a bit of wear, I was just a bit surprised given how durable shell generally is.

I,too, noticed that Darlton shell is much more delicate. Does CJ use different leather for its cordovan shoes? Anyone?
Darltons are a good deal when they are on sale,if you can get them for $415.

I bought both my Ravello and Cigar longwings from Carmel over a year ago. My Ravello shoes have crepe soles. They are very comfortable and don't look bad at all; however, because of the soles I wear them with casual clothing and "Friday" suits only.

Yes, RL shells scuff much more easily than other brands I have. I wore my Gifford shell chukkas for the first time Sunday and scuffed them miserably. Fortunately all the marks rubbed out well.
