LL of my suits have double-vents. Now odd-jackets are another matter -- a mishmash of single, double and no-vent. For some reason I associate no-vent with the Euro-look?

Serious question:

While I can completely understand the dislike of ventless jackets, I'm a little taken aback by all the dislike of centre vents expressed in this thread. Obviously, quite a few of you really hate them; but why?

for me, and ive discussed this alot before, i dont like center vents because the silhouette from the side can look a bit sloppy.

a person can be seated and then get up, the center vent has a tendency sometimes to overlap and hold up against gravity due to friction against each other, and that lack of drape causes you to have a sort of bell shape from the side. 2vent has less of this issue in my experienc.e

If I were an avid horseman I doubtless would feel differently. As I am not, I fail to see the use in them. Of the three types, ventless, center and side, they are the only one that commonly causes one to show his ass in public; something I'm not fond of.

Thanks for the answers.

It's strange, I have several suits with a centre vent and haven't noticed these problems. Maybe it's dependent on body shape and/or fit and I've just been lucky, but I continue to like my jackets with centre vents and will probably specify them again in the future (though not exclusively).

My understanding of venting is as follows: Ventless = Italian Single -or- Center Vent = American Double -or- Side Vents = British I have a few Ventless jackets, but only because I have the build to pull it off. I prefer Single vent over double. Apparently the Double Vent originated from some British aristocrat who asked they be done so he could wear his jackets whilst riding his horse. It wasn't Lord Raglan (as in sleeves), but someone else....I haven't time to Google on this at the moment. In any case, any of the 3 variations are acceptable in my opinion, as long as it fits properly, and compliments your build.

That seems unlikely. Jackets for riding have a single vent, usually a longer vent than you see on a regular jacket, but a centre vent none the less; so they split with your legs over the horse. A double vent would just sit rucked up behind you on the horses back. The only time you see a single vent on a traditional English jacket is one for equestrian related stuff.

I think you've gotten several parts of this mixed up.
