Growing up in South Africa, there were a couple of foods that I hated when I was a child, many of which I've come to love as an adult...

Examples are eggplant (or brinjals as we called them), dhal or lentil curry, Pumpkin Bredie (a type of slow cooked pumpkin stew), and babotie (similar to meat loaf)...

I must admit that I smile now when I realise that these things are pretty much everyday meals I really miss a lot now that I've moved to Australia...

I grew up in Cape Town then Joburg. I agree with you, back then I thought nothing of the food but now I end up paying importers big bucks for rusks, Mrs Ball's Chutney, Mebos etc etc. I can't get enough of the stuff!

Rocky Mountain Oysters?

Speaking of when I was a kid, I remember having to clean my plate of food. One night we had fried bologna and I wasn't allowed to leave the table until I finished it. I really hate bologna then and ended up sitting at the dining table all night and then going straight to bed.

That is about the only thing that I won't eat is tripe... In any form. Menudo is amazing except for the tripe part.

Things people go on about liking and I don't get it chevre -musky flavour lamb -bad childhood memories, ate it nearly every meal most sausages / manufactured meats durian/jack fruit - taste/smell /texture a winning combo dragon fruit - tastes like dirt filberts/brazil nuts nutella I will try any fruit or vegetable (hence I have tried durian), but odd cuts of meat scare me (tripe, heart, kidney, tongue), I have tried them but can't get over the texture or flavour. Then there is the list of food I like, but no longer eat as they are considered traif.

I love chow-chow, but it's definitely a condiment. I pile some on black-eyed peas every chance I get, but I can't imagine eating it by itself.

That's it. She makes it herself, along with various other disgusting things. I think she has bits of cauliflower in it too.
