Dear Folks:

Friend is having a birthday dinner Sat eve. Group will number 12 to 20.

He seeks a decent place in Chinatown downtown Manhattan. Flushing is too much of a shlep.

Any rex?

Doyer's vietnamese, deep in the belly of chinatown. Awesome food, rated 21 or 22 from Zagat which is amazing given the fact that most entrees are $7-9. I have been there a dozen times in the last few months and it never fails.

It's mostly tourist free and one of those New Yorker secrets.

I have heard good things about Doyer's.

doyers is good, + you get the historical thrill of 'the bloody angle'. lately we've been going to amazing 66 (kids like for whatever reason), and it's pretty good. 66 mott or mulberry - just south of canal...

it'll be worth your time. The grilled pork over noodles is simple yet awesome. The vietnamese egg roles are a great way to start the meal and they're like $3.

that spot on doyers st (the right-angled bend) was once 'the most dangerous' spot in nyc

it still looks quite sketchy and getting into the actual dining room of Doyer's doesn't help (find the yellow sign where the street curves, walk down the narrow staircase, take the hairpin turn to the right at the door that leads to the restaurant)

NYC Chinatown suck.

For better Chinese/Cantonese/Taiwanese food, head out to Flushings in Queens. Hop on the #7 subway all the way to get there.

Amazing 66 is good for groups, since the dishes are ridiculously large. (And tasty)

I ate there last night, with real live Chinese people no less. It was delicious.

Here are some of my favorites: 1. Joe's Shanghai: only order the soup dumplings 2. Peking Duck House: feels too touristy these days, but still delivers some of the best Peking duck around 3. Nyonya: Hands down the best Malaysian food in NYC. Cheap too. The Roti Canai and Chow Kueh Teow are phenomenal, don't miss. 4. Jing Fong: Not sure if dim sum is offered on Sat evenings though.
