Stephen Colbert & Jon Stewart.

I do not understand those people are rabid fans of these two. These two are mildly amusing at best. I also do not understand those who view Jon Stewart as some sort of legitimate news-source. I fear putting forth these opinions in San Francisco as I might mauled.

I agree on both counts. I think they're not funny, but that's not a major problem for me. The main problem is that they don't appear to be knowledgeable or well-read in any subject. That makes 'em perfectly qualified for the "dumbed-down" type of TV they specialize in, along with Bill O'Reilly, Bill Maher, etc., but not much else.

I also do not understand those who view Jon Stewart as some sort of legitimate news-source. He reports actual news. No less or more credible than Sean Hannity. Colbert is, IMO, funnier than Jonny.

Their schtick was amusing for the first couple of months. Stewart has been nothing but a bore since the Iraq war. Fanboys cannot admit it, but Stewart has become the left-wing version of O'Reilly. I actually preferred the Daily Show with Craig Kilborne as the host.

I think rabid fans of these shows are mainly blue-collar versions of NPR listeners, uninformed dabblers whose knowledge of any given topic goes no deeper than the sound-bites espoused by various talking heads.

I did see an amusing article a few weeks ago that showed that the majority of conservative Colbert viewers were actually unaware of the host's satire.

Colbert's White House Press Corps Dinner address was one of the finest moments of American satire. His show can be hit or miss, but when it hits, it's pretty damn golden.

I was a big fan of Kilborne on TDS, and was enraged when Stewart took over, I had never been a fan of his. But...he proved me wrong, big time. I think he is beyond hilarious, and far funnier than Colbert. Of course, Jon Stewart is not a legitimate news source, he is "news entertainment" just like Fox News and Rush Limbaugh. But are there people out there who use TDS as their only source of news? Absolutely, just like there are people who only get their news from the Savage Nation. The thing that sets Stewart apart from all the other "news entertainers" that have overtaken journalism these days, is that Stewart actually has integrity, which is more than I can say for all the talking heads on tv who claim to be journalists. Stewart is the only one I respect on the left, and Levin is the only one I respect on the right.

i still prefer kilbourn.

He was great in TDS, but once he went to network television, man he got lame as hell.

I don't watch either show regularly. Every few months, I'll have a "burst" where I'll watch a bunch of episodes and I agree that Colbert is funnier. I think he's pretty quick when he does his interviews. Much is junk but I do find him hilarious at times. As someone said earlier, when he's on he can be pretty funny. I think one of my favorite things about both of these shows is when they recap what politicians have said in the past as compared with whatever lies they're currently spewing.

Kilbourne was best doing his thing on SC. Colbert does some minor physical comedy that is underappreciated.

I think Jon Stewart is an incredibly funny comedian, but the show has become a bit stale in the last couple years. It's become too politicized and predictable. I wouldn't say that Jon Stewart has fallen anywhere near where Bill O'Reilly is because at the end of the day, he doesn't take himself too seriously and his show is founded upon laughing at politicians and nutcases, not yelling and directly insulting them. Colbert's show, I love with no reservations.
