Yeah its one of the few movies that the shaky-cam didn't bother me at all. I mean, its supposed to have been shot with a handheld camcorder. The depth of field and low light focus bothered me more than anything else, but only because I know that the camera they were supposed to be using is not even close to being able to capture those images in those conditions.

It was very entertaining but I didn't like it as a Star Trek movie. Very jokey and self-referential as I feared. And I barely even qualify as a casual ST fan. PS: What the hell was with all those lens aberrations?

I've only seen a few of the ST episodes, the original series, and I want to see this movie which would be my first ST movie. The thing that's caught my eye is how its going to mine the same material that made Star Wars so great- JJ Abrams admitted that he was a bigger fan of Star Wars than Star Trek, and wanted to bring some of that Star Wars quality to this movie.

Okay, so this is supposed to be really good. Normally I hate all things Star Trek, but this has a Metacritic of 84. I can't believe how good the reviews are. Guess I gotta see this ****!

it's pretty entertaining. really ******* cheesy and panders to the one-liner crowd. it's super fast-paced and doesn't seem like a 2 hour movie. i'm no die-hard star trek fan, but it's a little too "summer blockbuster" for me, almost in a michael bay fashion. i was hoping for something a little deeper than the end result.

^ +1

It was good but damn if it wasn't overly fast paced and very convenient plot-wise. Things clicked together in two seconds and you're just like "oh, ok, that was easy." And for the serious events in the movie it seemed like everyone just brushed them off in a minute and went on with their lives... very little lasting emotion.

But I guess that's a summer movie.

^Do you mean Uhura? I enjoyed it, but I'm a big nerd and a star trek fan and so it was almost guaranteed to be enjoyable. I even liked the really bad Star Trek movies (ala V: Final Frontier and Insurrection.) and the sheer scope/budget/etc. of this one was really nice. It probably cost more than the last 5 Trek movies combined (haha). I'm curious to see what the MAJOR trek nerds think of what happened to Vulcan. Seemed a bit of an egregious sacrilege to me...

I saw the movie last night. I've been a fan of Star Trek since the original series, so I was really looking forward to this. I thought it was good. I wasn't wowed, but didn't feel disappointment either. It was certainly the best Trek movie in years. Far and away better than any of the Next Generation movies, although not as good as Trek movies 2, 4, and 6. It you watched the original series, I think you'll appreciate the inside jokes/humor (of which there are many), but as my gf told me, still entertaining if you were never a fan. Plus, without giving too much away, Abrams put his own unique twist on the Star Trek universe while preserving Gene Roddenberry's vision, which was interesting and appreciated.
