For some reason it bugs me that threads like this sit in the same forum category as threads about deadlifts and diabetes.

I don't wear "fragrances" so I don't understand why once would want to look at pictures of a smell.

Shit...I'd need a wide-angle lens. This, for starters, is the Chanel herd. minus a bottle of Antaeus.

that small bottle at the front: is 50ml. All the bottles are from the 80's production.

The fragrances keep for that long? Aren't you worried about your stuff getting skunked?

The two big issues are light and heat - light more than heat. These all stay in their boxes, in the bottom drawer of the dresser. Pretty much all of them stay in a drawer somewhere.

As for turning, the usual victim is the opening: once that fades you're usually back to where you were, provided you've not been really careless with it.

^ Bottom drawer, out of sight... nice. Here is an internal conflict that I have thought about. Fragrances come in really nice looking bottles that perhaps one would want out in plain sight to look at. But at the same time, you want the bottles out of the light in temp controlled conditions to preserve what is inside. Have you ever thought of some kind of system where you can look at all the cool bottles and at the same time preserve what is inside?

^ hmmm, no...not really. Unfortunately, if you can see them... they're exposed to the light. Put it this way: the Osmotheque in Versailles (where they archive the really old classics, the relics, etc) stores everything in aluminum bottles, in a refrigerator.

I do know of people who've bought huge honking bottles (200ml plus), poured out the contents into smaller, sealed bottles for later use and then refilled the big bottle with tinted water, making a small factice (bottle for display only). 200 ml plus bottles, though, are specific to certain lines/manufacturers (Chanel/Guerlain/Caron), and in some cases you have to do a lot of searching or be lucky.

For the normal, day-to-day scents: I'd use it up and keep the empty for display.

why would anyone want to see this?

I suppose you are right. I get that fragrances are meant for smelling not for seeing and it probably would be pretty tacky to have you all your shit lined up for people to see.

But some of the bottles do look pretty swee!!

It seems ostentatious to me to display the bottles. Its like saying "hey look at the expensive brands of cologne I have," when the whole point of the fragrance is the smell.

Its like a girl I knew in college who had many shelves in her room covered with what appeared to be purses, but they turned out to just be the purse bags with the brand on them stuffed with newspaper. She was not displaying her purse collection, just the brands of purses she owns. Incredibly off-putting and tacky to me, personally.

Display the whole collection? Probably not.

But occasionally you get a statement bottle - something that stands on its own and is presentable whether it held perfume or water: Angel (the leaning star), or the winged Shalimar bottle, or the Chanel Exclusifs monolithic bottles. Some bottles are even more outrageously showy - blown glass, for instance.

Is it art? That's up for you to decide. I have a few bottles (the big Chanels) I'll keep once they're empty - partly as art, partly as a nostalgic symbol (reformulations, regulations, etc.) of bygone times.
