Eggs in one's beer?

I was just watching season 2 of The Wire, and the dock workers have for breakfast a glass of beer with a raw egg inside... has anybody tried this? The concept seems rather odd to me.

I like raw eggs and I like beer. The thought of the two sounds disgusting. But then again pisco sours are pretty good...

It's generally done with Guiness anyway, so the carbonation is a bit more smooth from the nitrogen.
