How do you read.

Over dinner this evening my wife and I were talking about how different our reading styles are. She, partly because of the nature of her job, tends to read four or five non-technical books at a time, and has no problem keeping them straight. I, on the other hand, tend to read one book at a time, and read it in a relatively short period of time. On average, we probably read the same amount, but in a very different manner.

Also, this study was interesting, I thought, though it was depressing to see how little people actually read these days.

A study of reading habits showed almost half of women are 'page turners' who finish a book soon after starting it compared to only 26 per cent of men.

The survey 2,000 adults also found those who take a long time to read books and only managed one or two a year were twice as likely to be male than female.

Men are also more likely to have shelves full of books that have never been opened.

How do you guys tend to read?

I picked up a copy of this last week, though my wife took it for herself. It will probably go to my daughter next, and then me.

My wife is using it with one of her students right now. She thinks it is great. More importantly, it has really helped her student.

That study is depressing. Left to my own devices, I tend to settle in with one book, or maybe two if I get really interested. But circumstances don't often allow me to do that. Right now there are three books on my nightstand that I'm actively reading, four next to the desk for research purposes, and I have a small handful of stuff in .pdf format to get to as well. It's been a while since I read anything for pleasure, and that makes me sad.

I've always had multiple books going at once. But during school, I choose to do a max. of two "pleasure books" at a time.

I'd bet you read with your knees together.

The same way Kim Peek does...the left eyeball if for the left page and the right eyeball is for the right page.

J/k...wish I could do that!

I can usually do 3 nonfiction books at a time. Or two nonfiction and a fiction book. But trying to read 2 fiction books at the same time really throws me for a loop for some reason.

One book at a time. I thought that this questions would be more along the lines of using inflections, etc. when reading "in one's head". When I read fiction, I don't do this whereas I will when reading aloud.

I'll generally have two books going at a time, but they're seldom both fiction/pleasure. Sometimes I'll dawdle along, knocking out a page or so a day, and then put my back into it for the last hundred or so pages, depending on circumstances.

I don't trust things that tell you how to read. That stuff is for semi-illiterates who read books with stickers that say, "10,000,000 Copies Sold"!

Thanks for pointing this out - I will probably pick this up and add it to my shelf of unread books.

Guilty.

Usually one at a time - never more than two. But I tend to read all of an author's books when I really like the first one.

I sometimes continue to "read" a book that I dislike in parallel with a new one for weeks or months until I realize I have no interest in picking it up. Which introduces a new question: do you finish all the books you start?

One book at a time, takes me about a week to go through a decent sized novel if I read every evening(not likely, especially in spring/summer). I have a lot of books I haven't read but that's because they are often gifts and I'm already in the middle of another book and I'll be all "yea let's see I have book a, b and c lined up next so I guess this new one will be after that..."
