I mostly avoid underground hip hop now, the vitality and relevance of their mainstream peers is generally far more interesting, but there are a few underground artists I keep coming back too (El-p, some of his Def Jux contemporaries e.t.c) but one underground rapper I particularly love is MF Grimm. MF Grimm, a largely unknown figure even by the standards of underground rap, blows his better-known contemporary out of the water. In a genre filled with tough guy posturing and braggadocio, MF Grimm stands out with a pretty unimpeachable gangster pedigree: he did hard time for convictions as an arms dealer, not a drug dealer, but an arms dealer. Grimm eschews constant guest spots, sneaker endorsements and Adult Swim collaborations in favor of no-nonsense gritty, yet-literate records. His beats are pared-down and minimal, and he manages to come across as witty and smart, without the pseudo-intellectual posturing that can make underground hip hop so insufferable. While MF Doom seems to make the same album over and over again, Grimm is less prolific, but has a far more varied ouevre. One of my favorite hip hop records, straight up is Grimm's magnum opus: The Downfall of Ibilys, A Ghetto opera. Highly recommended listening.
Why MF Grimm is better then MF Doom
