This is the correct answer. I travel internationally about 5 times a year with a family of four. I have done so for more than 10 years. Add in another 10 annual misc domestic flights for each of us and that tallies up in a hurry. I have used decent quality roller duffel bags (mostly from TJ Maxx) and have never (really never) had anything broken or stolen inside the bags. They last four or five years and then are cheap to replace. And trust me, I travel heavy. Wasn't long ago that I was traveling with eight pieces of this luggage, each just under the weight limit. Pickup limo is usually a Suburban.

Logic FAIL.

^^ I'm sure an over-used internet meme is somehow shorthand for stunning logic to disprove the point. Best of luck to you.

luggage is a dumb thing to skimp on. enjoy shear-torn zippers, ripped sides, detached straps, and blown rollers. yes, i have had *all* these things happen to cheap luggage i've collected from my student days. since work travel for the last couple of years ive gradually upgraded all of them with quality items. the very last remnant piece blew a wheel (thankfully in my hallway!) and i couldnt have been happier to replace it. have fun when your cheap shit blows up at the airport! that said, the rimowa polycarb, like most stiff-sided luggage, have a tendency to crack (despite what they claim). i would stick to denier or go for fully hard-sided (alum rimowa)

Seriously.

Fine, your $50 check-in bag survived your, say, 3 domestic and one international trips. Then you find it hemorrhaging your clothes on the conveyor belt in some foreign country. You then have to spend an unnecessary portion of your trip getting a replacement bag. I personally think that this trouble has a far greater negative value than the money you'd spend on a good bag that has qualities/construction that prevents such things from happening.
