Extreme Music (Black Metal, Noise, Grind etc) - Page 2

Wolves will be in Austin in a couple weeks, i'm likely to catch that show.

Some of my favorite metal bands at the moment are:
Baroness
Ghengis Tron
Converge
Mouth of the Architect
Wolves...
Mastodon
Gojira
etc.

For Grind-ish stuff, I really like Pig Destroyer's Phantom Limb. A great combo of more traditional metal with grind-ish type stuff.

Great thread. I'm not really into metal anymore; despite what some have said, it's really something you sort of grow out of. However, my all time favorites in extreme metal:

-Meshuggah, especially their epic album "I". Truly some of the heaviest and most dissonant work I've ever heard.

-Lux Occulta; great BM band that had enough symphonic / progressive elements to them to sound original without being too campy (dimmu borgir)

-Enslaved (Recent progressive leanings help separate them from the crowd)

-Burzum (Just awesome, classic & atmospheric)

I've tried very hard to get into and appreciate the slower sludgier noise bands such as Merzbow, Sunn 0))), & Neurosis but they are just too slow burning to hold my interest for any period of time.

Fuck you, I'm 28. Despite the fact that I listen to more Carlos Gardel than Cattle Decapitation does not reflect on quality or relevance. All the bands you listed suck, if you "grew out of" it Neurosis should be on your list.

Burzum: music to burn churches by.

Glad to see Gojira mentioned. They are definitely at the top of my contemporary metal list, I never seem to be able to catch them in the states.

Go fuck yourself. Neurosis is boring, Cattle Decapitation is some truly really terrible grind that is more or less the pure antithesis of musicianship. And the fact that I personally pursued other musical directions does not mean good metal, rare as it is, loses any relevance with age. It's more like it doesn't excite me as much to see a new release as it used to.

I kinda dig Neurosis and the whole Hydra Head thing. Definitely not one of the obsessive fans though. Recently I've just been craving power electronics. The Prurient/Kevin Drumm split is fucking sick. I saw an interesting looking cd of Melvins remixes at a local record shop. does anyone know if it's any good?

Saw Converge, Mastodon, and High on fire the other week w/ dethklok (yeah..that animated metal band on adult swim)

high on fire was meh...alright. Never really got into them.
Converge was as badass as ever.
Mastodon played all of Crack the skye then a few heavy favorites for an encore.

didn't stay for dethklok.

I don't honestly think I'll "grow out of metal". I listen to all kinds of music, and recognize that about 90% of all bands pretty much suck, metal or not.

Oh Magician, I saw Gojira around the time of From Mars...To Sirius. Great show. They're really nice guys to talk to as well.

Big fan of Skeletonwitch, though they don't really bring anything new. Just a solid melodic/black thrash metal band.

Yuma Nora's Jewels in the Snake Pit is great.

Unicorn WarriorI'm pretty in to High on Fire though I've never caught them live. Why do you think it was meh?

Still waiting for something good to hit DC as its a hassle to get to Baltimore (where all the good stoner/sludge metal plays) Last good show I saw was Om.

Awesome thread.

Wolves in the Throne Room is definitely one of my favorite black metal bands. I get a lot of flak from all the other "kvlt" kids when I say that, hipster black metal blahblahblah, but it's just way too fucking awesome. I saw them in Athens once with Krallice...definitely an awesome show. They lit the area with candles, very atmospheric and even the venue they chose was very "them".

I saw Converge + Mastodon on their recent tour with Dethklok. High on Fire was okay...I never really got into them. Converge was fucking awesome, as always. Definitely check out Jane Doe or Axe to Fall if you guys haven't heard, though they are hardcore and not metal. Mastodon is bullshit now with Crack the Skye, but they did play some Remission + Leviathan, which is always awesome. Also, the Dethklok crowd is definitely one of the worst ever. I swear I saw about 20 twelve year olds and everyone else was a stringy haired neckbeard.

You guys should all head down to Atlanta for Scion Rock Fest. Awesome music festival that they just started, and the best part is it's free. Last year they had Neurosis, Boris, Wolves in the Throne Room, Converge, Mastodon, Baroness and a fucking shitload more. Good stuff, we could all have an SF meet up beforehand or some shit haha.

Huge fan of extreme/experimental music.

I like noisy stuff. Like SPK, Einstursende Neubauten, any Rozz Williams spoken word or noise, etc etc.

For extreme metal, I always had a liking for black metal stuff, like Emperor.

Skeletonwitch played a free show here with Kylesa at one of our local record stores. They are some funny ass guys.

Yeah I have to get to fucking Scion fest this year. Missing it last year was one of the big regrets of my thus short life. If anyone can post details that would be awesome.
Once more details pop up about it I'll definitely relay it to you. And if it's anything like last time, I most likely can get you a ticket for free too. They gave them out at record stores around the Atlanta area last year, but it was so unorganized that I don't see how they could possibly not change the way they did it.

For experimental ambient music, Philip Jeck and William Basinski made some incredible stuff. Sunburned Hand of the Man has a ton of releases with good experimental pop, and even though Animal Collective have garnered distain among the noise fans because of their departure into much more obvious Beach Boys territory, their earlier "Here Comes the Indian" and their album under the moniker Avey Tare & Panda Bear are truly brilliant experimental records. Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAY-v5omWzs For dark/experimental pop electronica, I love Mu, in particular "Afro Finger & Gel" which I believe was a 2004 release.
