What hair dye should i choose for my current hair?

Naturally I am a very dark brown which is basically black. It currently has sort of random streaks of very light brown/blonde in (hairdressers). I want to go to a deep chestnut brown with a bit of tone, and possibly a slightly lighter brown just to highlight some tips around the face.

Does anyone have any advice on dye colours/numbers and where to buy online in the UK?

That's weird. All along I thought this website was for men.

Go natural. It stopped being cool to dye/bleach your hair after 1999.

Can't you find some pic of the color you want/like and take it in and show the girl at the salon and she will be able to match it perfectly for you.

I was thinking of doing it myself, they did a terrible job last time

if someone with training did a terrible job, how do you with no training expect to do a good job? if your mind is set on this, go to a better qualified salon (try a search on the interwebz).

I would push that date back to 1983, but we all have different definitions of cool.

As opposed to your past hair? Or your future hair?

At this point you'd be doing corrective color so I'm not sure I'd try yourself. If you're actually going to try to do it yourself (from the start), you need to figure out your current level of hair color (probably anywhere from 1-4 if it's as dark as you say). Then you need figure out the color level you want to go to, how many steps it would be and use the appropriate developer. Then, if you want highlights around your face, you can either use a different color / developer or just use bleach either with foils or combing the highlights through the hair. I'd either go back to the previous salon and communicate (take pics) of what you want or tell them what you didn't like or just go to someone else (with pics). At this point, since your hair is already colored so you're dealing with corrective coloring and not just coloring virgin hair which makes it more complicated that what I described above.

Cheers might get them to do it when I get it but can't actually decide on colour. Thinking the chestnut brown would be better in the winter and do something lighter for summer :/

If I was to do it myself, would you recommend going black/dark first as like a base and then go lighter again, and how long would you have to leave before dyes?

You can do some work on your own by getting some magazines with pictures of the look you're going for. This will help any stylist immensely.

Then you can do a simple consultation with as many or few salons as you like which shouldn't cost anything. Ask where you get a haircut for an opinion. If you see someone with cool hair / hair color (men or women) ask where they get it done and call for a consultation. Just go in for a couple of minutes and see what they say. They'll have color swatches which they can show you and plenty of suggestions.

Absolutely not. You're asking for lots of trouble if you do that (color-wise and condition-wise)

If you're doing it yourself, you're basically on your own. There are too many variables that I can't know in just speaking with you over the interwebs. Someone would really have to see your hair and its condition and color.
