Can anyone give me a quick and dirty run-down on the sort of range of what Gin's all about, and some of the big brands?
I'm somewhat familiar with the big ones, but I'm curious to know how Beefeaters is different from say Tanquary
and also, if the "better" gin's like Tanquarey 10 are worth the extra buck?

Hendrick's is my favorite.
Leopold's on the rocks is great, and I kind of like Bulldog in a martini.

Yes they are worth the extra money. With cheap gin it will taste a lot like rubbing alcohol. With higher end gin, more of the juniper flavors will be present, plus you often have the gin infused with botanicals and other agents (and I think it works here, unlike with vodkas). T10 for example, has lots of citrus infusions and I think it works quite well.
The flavor profile of gin will be very crisp and clean. I'm drawing a blank with better descriptors for juniper but you'll know it when you taste it.
Try a 1:1 G&T or a ratio of slightly more T to G to really get a sense of good gin, IMO. Some just can't be consumed straight.

Gin is my favorite alcohol for cocktails...
Beefeater Crown Jewel Gin is the best I have had but it is hard to find.
For gin and cranberry Plymouths Navy Strength gin is awesome.
The best gins that are easy to find are the regular version Plymouth and Tanquary 10 which is worth the extra money.
I am not sure I have ever seen it in the states but sloe Gin is excellent in champagne both Gordons and Plymouth make it.
