Pavement/College Rock Appreciation Thread - Page 5

college rock will forever mean 80s R.E.M., big audio dynamite, dinasaur jr, pixies, the replacements, sonic youth, etc, to me. Doesn't matter what college students are listening to nowadays, THAT was college rock.

basically, 'alternative rock' before it was called alternative rock.

REM is excrement. Pylon, The B-52s and the Method Actors were the best bands to come out of that Athens, GA scene.

despite the fact that i'm totally listening to Lady Gaga now...

surprised not too many mentions of Pavement's classic, Slanted and Enchanted. great album but i am partial to Crooked Rain x 2. saw them open for Sonic Youth in '92. yeah, it was amazing.

let's see what else that hasn't been mentioned already:

Thrill Jockey bands specifically Tortoise, Sea and Cake, and A Minor Forest.

more Matador. Helium, Bettie Serveert, Come, JSBX, Yo La Tengo.

Kill Rock Stars. Un-fuckin'-wound (two words, "Fake Train"). Sleater Kinney

K. Lois, Heavenly, Beat Happening (ok, pushing it with the "rock" here)

lo-fi that's not Sebadoh. Smog, Palace Brothers, Mt. Goats

Afghan Whigs

Galaxie 500

a whole bunch of stuff on the 4AD, Kranky, Merge labels.

etc, etc, etc...

I always get laughed at, but Brighten the Corners has always been my favorite Pavement album. It's definitely more "Pop" than any of their earlier stuff and I guess that's just what I like better. However, I have been accused of picking that album just to cause arguments though... of course, this is an accusation I normally get from a friend of mine after I tell him (only half-jokingly) that Lou Barlow was the best part of Dinosaur, Jr. and that Folk Implosion and Sebadoh are both better bands. A few friends and I are planning on making the trip out from Detroit to NYC in September to see Pavement (I think our tickets are for the third evening of their little stint). Anybody else on here going to be in attendance?

This. While other genres may be worse musically, due to it's ubiquitous nature everywhere white males congregate it's the worst fucking thing ever.
