American Apparel: how do they keep their price down?

I like their tees a lot. Part of the reason is the attractive price for "made in Downtown LA". The economics, though, doesn't seem to work out. Are their workers mostly volunteers?

On ebay it is. I remembered paying something like $3/shirt for 20 shirts from an ebay seller. Not sure if the deal is still on.

A has to be one of the most overrated brands advocated on this site, and that's saying something. Their shirts have no taper at all, so they don't work for anyone with a muscular build at all.

Not using graphics (and the subsequent designers of those graphics) has to help quite a bit.

Perhaps the answer is poor quality. The t-shirts are flimsy, prone to opening at the seams, and inconsistently sized.

An AA opened up in town several months ago and i was pretty excited considering how much I've heard about it, but goddamn, I don't think I've ever been so disappointed by a clothing store. Weird looking loose flimsy t-shirts and no jeans in sight. And some of their shirts were between 70 and 80 dollars. Ridiculous. I can't imagine I'll ever be stepping in there again,

A: the ultimate triumph of marketing over substance. I've seen better shirts sold for 1/50th the price in a low end market in Jakarta, Indonesia.

They fit me okay and i'm slightly athletic, but theyre not really cheap... compare it to the higher quality uniqlo, 3 for $10.

But yea AA aren't bad, but they seem even more attractive when other brands sell teeshirts for like $30-70

Anyone else suspect that most of the people hired in their 'downtown LA' factory aren't even Americans?

their wholesale prices are a lot lower (obviously) and you dont have to order quantities to save that much. Thats why you can get them cheaper on ebay. E.G. A 20 dollar retail shirt will wholesale for 6 each (for up to 11) and 3 each at a dozen.

I was at a store of theirs about a month ago, and their new wool coat caught my eye; however, once I tried it on, I realised the sleeves were different lengths!

Their sizing sucks! I bought one of the s/s leisure shirts in store and loved it...so I ordered two from their website, but these shirts in the same size were 3 inches longer and the sleeves were about 2 inches longer.

American Apparrel is not a bargain; it is a waste.

A sizes are REALLy inconsistent.

I have clothes ranging from xs to medium...

I haven't had quality problems from AA yet

It might be cheaper because it's a veritcally integrated company.
